Sentence fragment definition:

A sentence fragment is a type of incomplete sentence that lacks the necessary grammatical
elements to make an independent clause.
A sentence has two characteristics: it should have a subject and a predicate and it
should expresses a complete thought.
If sentence lacks one of the two characteristics Such group of words is called
a sentence fragment.
Example Sentence Fragments
1. In so many ways.
This fragment does not have a subject or a verb. Rather, it is a prepositional phrase. It is not
a complete sentence.
2. Once we leave for the movie.
This fragment has a noun, “we,” and a verb, “leave,” but it isn’t a complete sentence. It is
subordinating clause.
• Sentence fragment: Cried with her friends. (Who cried with her
friends?)
Complete sentence: Pem cried with her friend.
• Sentence fragment: Suggested another week of
treatment. (Who suggested another week of treatment?)
Complete sentence: Our family doctor suggested another week
of treatment.
• Sentence fragment: Drank the entire contents of the milk carton
in one go. (Who drank the entire contents of the milk carton in
one go?)
• Complete sentence: My younger brother drank the entire
contents of the milk carton in one go.
• Sentence fragment: The city with destroyed roads. (What about
the city with destroyed roads?)
Complete sentence: The city with destroyed roads had finally
had its roads fixed.
• Sentence fragment: The black dog with white spots. (What
about the black dog with white spots?)
Complete sentence: The black dog with white spots is my pet
since I was ten years old.
• Sentence fragment: The student council officer who gave a long
introduction (What about the student council officer who gave a
long introduction?)
Complete sentence: The student council officer who gave a
long introduction was actually presenting an esteemed figure
from the media.
