Environmental Chemistry
Environmental Chemistry involves the study of the effects
that chemicals have on the air, water and soil and how they
impact the environment and human health. It requires
knowledge of fundamental principles of many subject
areas, including organic chemistry, soil science,
biochemistry, toxicology and ecology.
The 4 segments of environment are:-
• Atmosphere
• Hydrosphere
• Lithosphere
• Biosphere
Atmosphere
These elements are Al, Sb, As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Ce, In, Pb,
Hg, Mo, Ag, Te, Tl, Sn, Ti, W, U, and Zn . For instance, As, Pb,
and Cd—which are well-known toxic metals—are required in
trace quantities for the growth of animals.
Toxic matters may be classified
according to their function and effects,
such as :-
• Mutagens
• Carcinogens
• Pesticides
• Food additives
