Mr. Tan earned ₱4 936 for selling a piece of


jewelry. He also earned ₱72 650 as commision
for selling a car. He plans to deposit all of his
earnings in his bank account. His previous
account balance is ₱109 374. what will be the
new account balance after his deposit?
Solution:
Let us use problem – solving strategies to
answer the word problem.
Step 1:
Understand the problem.
In understanding the problem, you must know
what is given and what is asked.
Asked:
The account balance after the deposit.
Given:
₱72 650 – commission for selling a car

₱4 936 – earnings from selling a piece of jewelry.

₱109 375 – previous account balance.


Step 2:
How do you intend to solve the problem?
Spot word clues used.
Then provide the needed operation based on
the word clues.

already seated in the east wing. There are 56
095 already seated in the west wing. How many
more seats are still available or vacant?

Understand the problem.
In understanding the problem, you must know
what is given and what is asked.
Asked:
The number of seats still available or vacant.
Given:
120 000 – total sitting capacity

42 846 – people seated in the east wing.

56 095 – people seated in the west wing.


Step 2:
Word clues: More seats, available or vacant

Plan (Operation):
The word more usually involves addition.
However, you are actually counting the remaining
number of vacant seats. Add the number of seated
people first. Then subtract the total sitting capacity
from the sum.
