A. HEALTH AND WELLNESS
WELLNESS, A TERM WHICH HAS GAINED POPULARITY, ESSENTIALLY REFERS TO OPTIMAL HEALTH WHILE
HEALTH IS MADE UP OF ALL RESOURCES THAT ALLOW ONE TO LIVE A SATISFYING AND PRODUCTIVE
LIFE-ONE CHARACTERIZED BY SENSE OF HARMONY WITH NATURE AND HUMANITY.
IT INCLUDES AN ENJOYABLE AND POSITIVE APPROACH TO A LIFESTYLE THAT PROMISES A HIGH LEVEL OF
WELL-BEING, A CONSCIOUS COMMITMENT TO GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT IN ALL AREAS OF LIFE.
WE FOCUS ON THREE AREAS SUCH AS:
1. SELF-RESPONSIBILITY

• Is the key to personal freedom


• Taking responsibility for aspects of life that are within your control
• Responsible of life experience. (choices, behavior and happiness)
• “I am responsible for my emotions so I don’t unload my anger, neediness or pain on
others”
2. SELF-FULFILLMENT

• The ability to make yourself happy and complete through your own efforts.
• We create more meaningful moments, more capable of, our work lives and our personal
lives hang together better
• Is also realizing of one’s deepest desire and capacities
3. RICHER QUALITY OF LIFE

• This refers to the general well-being of people and societies.


• A person’s environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation, social well-
being, freedom, human rights and happiness are very significant
• The wellness concept is based on the premise that adopting health-enhancing behaviors
will help reduce potential disease risk factors and promote well-being. (illness)
B. COMPONENTS OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS

• Psychological well-being –combines both one’s emotional and mental status. Healthy
people strive to maintain a psychological balance and know when and how to express
their emotions appropriately and comfortably.
• Spiritual well-being –is having positive sense of meaning and purpose in life. True
spirituality includes philosophy, beliefs, values, faith, creed, principles, moral and ethics.
Spiritual health fosters a feeling of being connected to one’s inner self and to the
universe. It also holds not losing hope amidst setbacks.
• Physical well-being – includes being physically fit, eating the right kinds of food and
amounts of food and getting adequate sleep and rest. Physical fitness includes
cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and healthy body
composition.
• Social well-being – having satisfying, trusting relationships and interactions with others.
A socially healthy person is fair, just and shows concern toward others and appreciates
differences in people. One is considered socially well if he feels connected with people
and the community.
• Vocational well-being is finding a meaning in what one is doing- at work, in school, in
leisure pursuits. They find their activities challenging, stimulating and rewarding. They
are team players who can work harmoniously with others.
• Environmental well-being – awareness of the impact of environment forces such as
sound, light, air, water and land on life and therefore taking care not to contribute to
environmental degradation.
C. CORPORATE WELLNESS

• Is formalized approach to preventive health care that can positively affect employees’
lifestyles and reduce health care cost, major medical problems-long term disability.
• A workplace health awareness program can address environmental changes that can
improve health, screen the entire target population for specified health risks and offer
intervention strategies.

E. LIFESTYLE AND WELLNESS

• Lifestyle includes healthy habits, of which nutrition is a major component but only one
among others- work habits, leisure activities, etc.
• It is important to note, however, that even the ultimate “health nut” may not have
complete control over his/her wellbeing.
• Factors such as access to medical care, psychosocial and physical environment such as
diet and exercise can be controlled.
F. HOW TO ACHIEVE TOTAL WELLNESS

• After knowing the components of total wellness, the next step is to identify and modify
behaviors that do not contribute to wellness.
• Behaviors are physical and cognitive responses that are triggered by some type of stimuli-
either external or internal.
HUMOR AND WELLNESS

• It is well documented that a sense of humor offers many wellness benefits.


• A sense of humor can facilitate relationships by enhancing skills of communication.
• it can dilute pain, wipe out anger and bring joy and playfulness to everyday life.
G. STRATEGIES FOR WELLNESS

• Be accountable
• Keep positive attitude
• Make lifestyle changes
• Strive for balance
• Have an abundant sprinkling of love, hope, and faith.
