DATA
COMMUNICATION
Data communication is exchanging
information from one entity to the
other using a transmission medium.
As you can notice, although simple,
the definition of data
communication leaves many.
Exchange: Data exchange is where
data is shared between systems and
organizations without alteration
complete with the content and
meaning of the data.

.
Information:
Information is organized or
classified data, which has some
meaningful values for the receiver.
Information is the processed data on
which decisions and actions are
based.
Transmission:
Data transmission means the movement
of the bits over a transmission medium
connecting two devices.
Types of transmission:
Parallel transmission
Serial transmission
Media /Medium
Various media are used for data
communication. It is possible to divide
all these media into main types.
 Guided Media
 Radiated Media
Components of data
communication:
A communication system is made
up of the following components:
 Message
 Sender
 Receiver
 Communication Channels
 Set of rules (Protocol)
Message: The data to be transmitted or communicated, which can include
numbers, text, photos, sound, or video.

Sender: The device that sends the data message (e.g., computer, video
camera)
Receiver: The device that receives the message (e.g., a computer,
workstation, television)

Communication Channels:
In a nutshell, communication channels are mediums through which
you can convey a message to its intended audience.
Set of rules(protocols)
A specific set of communication rules
is called a protocol.
Types of protocol:
Transmission Control Protocol
(TCP):
is a standard that defines how to
establish and maintain a network
conversation by which applications
can exchange data.
Internet protocol (IP):
is a set of standardized rules that
allow computers to communicate on
a network such as the Internet.
TYPES OF DATA COMMUNICATION
Data communication can be classified into several types based on
various criteria:
• Simplex communication
• Half duplex communication
• Full duplex communication
Simplex
communication

Simplex communication is a type of

communication channel that allows
data to flow in only one direction. In
simplex communication, the
transmission can occur either from
the sender to the receiver or from
the receiver to the sender, but not
simultaneously.
Half duplex
communication

Half-duplex communication is a
communication channel where data
can flow in both directions, but not
simultaneously. In other words,
devices can both transmit and
receive data, but not at the same
time. Instead, they take turns
sending and receiving data.
Full duplex
communication

Full-duplex communication is a
type of communication channel that
allows data to flow simultaneously
in both directions. In full-duplex
communication, devices can
transmit and receive data
simultaneously, enabling two-way
communication without the need for
alternating intervals.
Role of Data
Communication in our life
• Data Communication serves a multitude of
purposes in today's interconnected world.
• Data Communication is crucial for businesses to
transmit important data, conduct online
transactions, share resources and collaborate in
real-time across different locations.
• Moreover, data communication plays a vital role
in enabling entertainment services like streaming,
media, online gaming and social networking.
• Overall, the uses of data communication are vast and diverse, permeating
almost every aspect of our personal and professional lives.
Advantages and Disadvantages of
Data Communication:
Advantages: Disadvantages:
• Successful completion of works • Poor planning

• Cost minimization • Poor worded messages

• Help to plan • Environmental factors

• Share ideas, suggestions, and • Unqualified assumptions

complaints

• Status differences between sender and

• Democratic management receiver
