CRITICAL

READING SKILLS
OBJECTIVES

1.Explain critical reading as looking for ways of


thinking and as reasoning;
2.Identify claims explicitly or implicitly made in a
written text;
3. formulate evaluative statements a bout a text read;
4. evaluate the validity of arguments in the text
Intertext
refers to a work whose meaning
is shaped by referencing or
calling to mind another texts.
Example:

Chronicles of Narnia- it alludes to


the bible, and some of the parts
parallel some scenes in the Bible.
Example:

-The main plotline of Disney's The


Lion King is a take on
Shakespeare's Hamlet.
HYPERTEXT
is characterized by the external links
embedded in a text by the writer. In a
hypertext, the reader can read the text in a
non linear way, because he is led to other
links outside the main text.
CLAIM

state or assert that something is the


case, typically without providing
evidence or proof.

A fallacy is the use of
invalid or otherwise faulty
reasoning, or "wrong
moves" in the construction
of an argument.
Ad Hominem
Occurs when someone tries to
refute an argument by
attacking the character of a
person instead of attacking the
ideas.
- I cannot accept your
argument because, unlike me,
you were not educated at
Harvard University.
Red Herring
A red herring is something
that misleads or distracts
from a relevant or important
question.
- The teacher asked you if you
are done with your
assignment. You answer her
that your head is aching.
False Analogy
Occurs when an arguer presents
his/her argument as one of only
two options despite the presence
of multiple possibilities.
- Are you going to finish your
assignment or you fail?
Bandwagon
Occurs when an argument is
considered to be valid because
it is what the majority thinks.
- Most Filipinas want to have a
fair skin because they think
they look beautiful.
Hasty Generalization
Occurs when a sample is not
significant or enough to
support a generalization about
a population.
- Ilocanos are self-centered.
- Martha, the foreigner from
France, is very impolite.
French people are mean and
rude.
