CYBERTECTURE

ANANYA BURMAN ROY

WHAT DO WE UNDERSTAND BY CYBERTECTURE:

Cybertecture is the 21st century version of architecture.

Cybertecture is basically architecture in different form, a new creation of

living and working spaces with a mix of technology, multimedia, and many
more.

CYBERTECTURE
“ In the 21st Century, buildings will not be created by just concrete, steel and
glass of the 20th Century, but also with the intangible materials of technology,
multimedia, intelligence and interactivity.”

CONCEPT OF CYBERTECTURE

The concept behind this new style of architecture is to create a new standard
- a new level for modern day architecture and not just use concrete, steel and
glass the create the buildings, but with new ones and with more interesting
features.

Conventional architecture combined with technology and new innovations

allow cybertecture to higher performance than conventional architecture.
NECESSITY OF CYBERTECTURE

This is especially applied for

•better use of energy,
•recycling of resources,
•greater intelligence of the building.

CYBERTECTURE
Buildings of the future will be typified by technology, multimedia, intelligence
and interactivity.

ADVANTAGES OF CYBERTECTURE OVER CONVENTIONAL ARCHITECTURE

Cybertecture ultilises the latest innovations in technology and concepts to create

new buildings that can perform at a higher and broader level than conventional
architecture. Our buildings are intelligent enough to "know and talk" to occupants,
take care of their health, deal with energy use in the building by having sensors that
know how best to modulate systems, interact with value-added services to
empower people to live, work or play in a more powerful way.
Conventional architecture is restricted to conventional spaces of concrete, steel
and glass.
Cybertecture goes beyond by ultilising the 21st century materials of data,
intelligence and information technology.
FATHER OF CYBERTECTURE

James Law is considered as the “FATHER OF CYBERTECTURE”

Great creations are possible based on the heritage coupled with
modern technology.

HIS VISION OF CYBERTECTURE

CYBERTECTURE
James Law’s thoughts and vision led to the concept of Cybertecture.
His theory is based on the following considerations-
•the buildings that can provide the needs and requirements of tomorrow would
represent Cybertecture.
•There were several crisis during the years of evolution. Great creations are
products that survive the crisis. The Taj Mahal and the Pyramids of Egypt are
examples. Those were constructed while only on investment of labour. Even
then, it survived for years.
•Today we have technology, qualitative materials, and experts. We shall utilize
it. The need and requirement for tomorrow can be complied only with
technology and architecture. That shall be a combination of today’s knowledge
and experience of yesteryears. That’s what is Cybertecture.
•Such structures shall hold a place beyond Hi-tech technology.
It shall strengthen the lives of people.

‘CYBERTECTURE EGG’ FOR
MUMBAI

CYBERTECTURE
INTRODUCTION

The Cybertecture Egg is a Cybertecture building that brings together iconic

architecture, environmental design, intelligent control systems, and
evolutionary engineering to create the most innovative building for the city of
Mumbai and for India in the 21st Century.

CYBERTECTURE
CONCEPT

The concept for the Cybertecture Egg was inspired by looking at the world in
terms of the planet being a self-sustaining vessel with an ecosystem that
allows life to exist, grow and evolve. Like our planet Earth, the building has a
sustainable ecosystem derived from Cybertecture thinking to give the
building’s inhabitants both a dynamic physical world and access to virtual
spaces of the connected world. As with Earth, the form of the Cybertecture
Egg is extruded from a sphere and evolved to create a unique and iconic
building, which serves as a beacon and nucleus for the immediate central
business district area known as Bandra Kurla Complex.
THE BUILDING

The scheme comprises 33,000 square meters of office space stacked in 13

stories (62m height) with highly intelligent building management systems and
3 levels of basement providing 400 car parking spaces. The cantilever part of
the egg spans more than 40m.

CYBERTECTURE
THE STRUCTURE

The structure of the Cybertecture Egg uses a diagrid exo-skeleton, which

creates a rigid structural system allowing for large column-free floor plates and
high space flexibility. The ingenuity of this form effectively reduces
approximately 15% of construction material use compared to a conventional
orthogonal building. The structural diagrid is one of its kinds in the world, and
uses cast steel nodes of solid steel to create a fire resistant structure.

CYBERTECTURE
DESIGN FEATURES

The building’s design attempts to decrease energy demands through

passive solar design.
The construction of an elevated garden helps to cool the building (through
a process called thermolysis) and the implementation of photovoltaic
panels and wind turbines on the roof.

CYBERTECTURE
Even water conservation is taken care of with the incorporation of a water
filtration system that recycles grey water for irrigation purposes.

ECOSYSTEM

This building have an ecosystem of environmental technologies that

makes the project one of the most sustainably advanced designs in the
world. About 20% of the water usage of the building is recycled through
the rainwater harvesting system, the sewage treatment and wetland cell
systems. The building’s air conditioning is done by naturally cooled water
from an UG reservoir. The building management systems installed makes
sure of the reduction in energy usage in less utilized and less occupied
spaces.
GREEN FEATURES

• Orientation of Building: The building is orientated towards the ideal direction

vis-a-vis the sun to minimize solar and heat gain.
• Sky Gardens: Green areas of the building provide sun shading, oxygen
replenishment, refuge areas for people as well as cooling for building and
wetland filter beds for water recycling.

CYBERTECTURE
• PV Farms: Photovoltaic cells are integrated into the façade facing the sun to
help provide an alternative electricity source.
• Intelligent Glass Façade: The building’s glazing has variable fritting and tones
based on sun orientation, as well as variable shading and tinting.
• Water Recycling System: The recycling of potable water is done through a
combination of rain water harvesting systems, sewerage treatment and
filtration, and wetland cell systems. These effectively recycle up to 20% of the
water supply consumption of the building.
• Underground Water Cooling: Related to the water recycling system, the
underground cooling system embedded deep underground in a reservoir
provide naturally chilled water for the building’s air conditioning.
• Intelligent Building Management Systems: BMS to reduce energy use in less
utilized or less occupied locations.

FOR
DUBAI WATERFRONT

CYBERTECTURE
The 18-story façade of James Law’s cybertecture’s new Pixel Tower in
Dubai was inspired by the moving bubbles in a champagne glass and built
for the young, techie and trendy. Intended for the Dubai Waterfront, Pixel
Tower draws on passive solar techniques and strategic facade geometry to
minimize heat gain on the structure’s south side and optimize views out over
the Persian Gulf to the north.
THE MAJOR CHALLENGES FACED IN INDIA IN
LAUNCHING CYBERTECTURE

The main challenges include education and understanding of the concept of

cybertecture. For established developers, builders and local governments, the
old conventional architecture seem enough.
Only when the people will become aware of the potentials of cybertecture

CYBERTECTURE
they will know that this is the only way India can accelerate long-term
development of much needed infrastructure.
Applied in buildings designed for India, the concept of cybertecture will allow
Indian buildings to be ahead of global trends
Buildings of the future will be typified by technology, multimedia, intelligence
and interactivity.
