• I was born on January 31, 1917 in Manila.

• I finished my music studies at the Academy
of Music of Manila in 1935.
• I went to Paris, France to study piano.
• I also studied music at Columbia University.

• My mission was to understand and make

Filipino traditional music well-known.
• I collected lots of music recordings from
remote villages and islands.
• I traveled to places like the Philippines,
Sarawak, Thailand, Kalimantan, Africa, and
Brazil.

• I wrote papers that taught both Filipinos

and foreigners about Philippine traditional
music.
• My works, like Ugma-Ugma (1963),
Pagsamba (1968), and Udlot-Udlot (1975),
were like big achievements for me in
promoting Philippine music.
• Lastly, I became respected professor in
University of Philippines (UP).
