Anjuman-e-Himayat-e-Islam

Anjuman-i-Himayat-i-Islam is an Islamic intellectual


and Social Welfare Organization with branches both
in India and Pakistan. It was founded in Lahore on
24 September 1884 in a mosque known as Masjid
Bakan inside Mochi Gate, Lahore, by Khalifa
Hameed-ud-Din.

Background:
 Christian Missionaries and Hindu Pandits were
having the hold of the educational institutes of
Punjab.
 On 24th Sept. 1884 Chiragh Din called a
meeting of 250 Muslims in Mochi Gate Mosque
Lahore.

Introduction:
Aligarh Movement and Darl-ul-Uloom Deoband
adorned the Muslims lives with modern and
Islamic education. Anjuman-i-Himayat-i-Islam
also did the same job but in a different way.

Establishment of the Anjuman-i-
Himayat-i-Islam:
On September 24, 1884 Anjuman was found in the
mosque Bakan Khan gate, Lahore. Anjuman-i-Himayat-
e-Islam was based on uplifting the Muslim glory and
respect by its own means and source without the
support of the British government. When this Anjuman
was found there were about 250 members of it. Khalifa
Hameed-ud-Din was the founder of this Anjuman Abdur
Rahim, Dr. Mohammad Din Nazir, Maulvi Charagh Din,
Maulvi Ghulam Mohammad, Haji Meer Shams-ud-Din
and Khan Najam-ud-Din were other active members of
the Anjuman-i-Himayat-e-Islam Lahore. The objectives
of the Anjuman were as follows.

Islam:
 Answer to the objections of Christian
missionaries.
 Formation of Modern Islamic Educational
Institutes
 To safeguard the Muslim identity, propagation
and values
 To counter Arya Samaj and other Hindu activities

 Cultural and social welfare of the Muslims
Objectives:
The Anjuman decided to work towards the
following aims and objectives:
 To arrange for the religious and general
education of Muslim boys and girls.
 To propagate and defend Islam against the
Christian missionaries and Hindu revivalists.
 To counteract the propaganda against Islam
through speeches and publications.
 Protection of orphan children to given them
education
 Protection and the development of Muslims,
social, economic, political and education rights. 10
Educational Activities:
 The Anjuman started educational activities with
primary school in a house with a rent Rs. 2.5
monthly.
 It gave importance for the establishment of the
female’s schools and opened a few in the first
two years.
 In 1886, a boy’s boarding school with
accommodation for the students was
established. Gradually and slowly in 1887, it was
upgraded to the middle school.
 It established an intermediate college, which 11
was raised to the Degree level in 1890.
Anjuman-i-Himayat Islam was a pragmatic
institution to achieve its objectives; the Anjuman
took some practical steps.
 In 1884, two schools were established under the
administration of this Anjuman.
 The primary school for girls was also established.
 In 1925, a girl’s primary school was was started by
the Anjuman.
 In boys sector, in 1889, a boy’s school named
Madrassa-tul-Musalamin in Sherwana Gate, Lahore
was established. 12
 In 1905, Islamia College Railway Road, Lahore for
boys was also established by the Anjuman Islamia
College Civil Lines, Lahore , Islamiat College Lahore
Cantt.
 Himayat-ul-Islamia College, Lahore and Islamia
Degree College, Kasur were other institutions really
quenched the thirst of education of the students of
the Punjab.
 Sir Syed, Allama Iqbal, Nawab Mohsin-ul-Mulk,
Sheikh Abdul Qadir, Justice Shah Din and Maulana
Atlaf Hussain Hali attended its sessions and
supported its activities. 13

Donation System:
 In the first meeting, 54 rupees collected.
 In the first year, 750 rupees collected.

Muthi Bhar Atta Scheme:
 Muthi Bhar Atta Scheme was introduced for
raising funds for the Anjuman.
 In every Muslim’s home a small quantity of the
flour (Muthi Bhar Atta) was saved to support the
Anjuman.
 After one week, members of the Anjuman
accumulated that flour from every house and
disposed off it for raising funds.

Political Services:
Anjuman-i-Himayat-i-Islam also rendered
invaluable political services under the flag
of Muslim League. It played a major role
in the freedom of the Muslims of the Sub-
Continent by arranging its annual
meetings which were presided over by
the leading Muslim personalities like Sir
Syed, Allama Iqbal, Abdul Qadir, Maulana
Hali.

Political Services:
Later on, the student of Islamia
College Railway Road, Lahore played a
significant role in Pakistan Movement.
They spread throughout the country
and propagated the Two-nation theory.
In March 1940, these students played
a leading role in organizing the annual
session of the Muslim League Minto
Park, Lahore.

Social and Religious Services:
 Anjuman established an orphanage and two
centres for adult education. Moreover, it
published error-free Quran and introduced the
Islamic education in its institutions.

 The Anjuman is running an orphanage (Yateem
Khana) established in 1884.

Other Activities:
 Due to the weakness of the Muslims, Muslim
children were converted to Christianity by
Christian missionaries. The Anjuman tried its
best to awaken the Muslim community. The
Anjuman also established Dar ul Aman and Dar
ul Shafyat, for the helpless Muslims children and
needy widows.
 Its monthly journal Himayat-i-Islam was started
in 1885, it became a weekly in 1926. On the
other hand the large number of books on
History, Civilizatioin, Culture and biography on
life of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) were published 21

by the Anjuman.
Anjuman Himayat ul Islam
A Platform
 Its annual session became one of the National
Festivals for Muslims of Punjab.
 Was attended by many Muslim Leaders.
 Speeches were delivered on various subjects.
 Maulana Nazir Ahmkad and Maulana Shibili
frequently attend meetings of Anjuman and
addressed the audience.

Anjuman Himayat ul Islam
A Platform
 Allama Iqbal’s public life as a Poet started in
1900, when he recited a poem for the first time
on the stage of Anjuman.
 He was appreciated so much that later on he
was requested to compose poems for the annual
meetings of Anjuman.
 Iqbal’s poems were full of inspiration for the
national awakening.

Conclusion:
 Concluding, we can say Anjuman Himayat-i-
Islam was really a great institution.
 Its motive was to save Islam for Muslims
community.
 It tried to provide education for the Muslims of
the sub-continent.
 This institution had a great impact on the
Muslim community.
 The Anjuman had its own press and published
on religious and literary topics.
 One important task was producing a correct text

of the Holy Quran.
