What is Lesson Planning?

*Planning is an integral part of teaching in all levels of our school

system.
*Planning is made because it results in better teaching and more
productive learning.
*It is a means to an end , not an end in itself. It is an essentially an
experience for anticipatory teaching.
*A lesson Plan serves as a blue print for the classroom teacher. It serves
as compass that directs the teacher and her pupils to point of
destination or to be accomplished.
*All well-taught lesson are the results of careful planning.
*A lesson plan or a course plan furnishes the teacher a clear
comprehension of the main objectives which subject or course seek to
realize.
* It gives a general over-view of the goals to be achieved and the learning
experiences to be provided for the day, week, a semester of year.
*In other words, it provides the general framework for the work of the
day or term that will be carried out.

*The sole purpose of lesson planning is the improvement of teaching of

the teachers and the teacher of the pupils. A well made lesson plan will
give the teacher a feeling of confidence and security in the classroom,
because she will have definite and appropriate experiences ready to
develop with his pupils.
*A teacher without a lesson plan has no point of departure and no point of
destination.
*The successful outcomes of teaching depend to a great extent
upon the manner the daily plan and the plan have been prepared.
• THE BASIC STEPS IN LESSON PLANNING
1.Formulating goals, aims to accomplish
• -The formulation of the aims, objectives of education is merely one element
and by means the most important in the construction of adequate lesson
plan. The teacher should plan challenging goals for the pupils in conformity
with his own larger instructional aims and objectives. Aims should be
specific, attainable, and related to the broad aims of education. Objectives
must be clearly understood by the pupils. The teacher should be familiar
with them if she/he is to choose wisely daily task and unit aims and
objectives. The aims or objectives must however provides specific attention
to individual differences. The success of any plan for the pupils may depend
for the pupils may depend quite largely upon how intensely the pupils
develops and sustains the purpose or goals desired.
2. Selecting and organizing subject-matter
- The second element in planning is the selection and organization of
subject-matter to be learned. In this step the teacher should anticipate what
situation are to be met, what materials, activities, information, understanding,
and skills are necessary to achieve the goals. The subject-matter should be
selected and organized according to goals/objectives to be accomplish. The
pupils abilities, interest, and needs are important factors in the selection and
organization of subject- matter. It is highly desirable that the subject-matter
and other instructional materials be selected as closely as possible to the
activities and problems which compose the normal processes of social
beings in a democracy.
Class room teacher must possess a mastery of the subject matter,
instructional materials and activities that will provide the nucleus for
classroom experiences. Mastery of the subject-matter by the teacher is
essential in planning the work. When the mode of organization of subject-
matter has been decided upon instructional materials can be selected. A
selection of approach must be made that the teacher believes will provide
the best learning atmosphere for children.
3. Determining methods /procedures in planning
The third element in planning is determining how to proceed in developing the subject-
matter or accomplish the goals or objectives set up. The teacher’s concern in planning is for
the total growth and development of the pupils . The method or procedure to be used is often
determined by the aims to be accomplished. The nature and difficulty of the subject-matter,
and the ability and experiences of the pupils. Likewise, the equipment and devices available
are to be taken into consideration in the selection of method or procedure to be used.
In other words, method or procedure falls for the teacher’s familiarity with the aims sought in
the classroom teaching.

4. Evaluating the effectiveness of the procedure

The fourth element in lesson planning is to evaluate what has been done interms of the
objectives established. The plan should provide for the evaluation of success in the
realization of the objectives. Evaluation should include all factors in the teaching –learning
program, the teaching methods and techniques, the use of school equipment and other
important learning factors.
5. Giving the assignment
The major element in instructional planning is giving the
assignment. An assignment is generally recognized as the most
important phase of teaching learning activity. The fundamental aim
of the assignment is to give the pupils definite work to do guide
stimulate them to the performance of such work which will result in
educative experience. The assignment should point out a goal to be
reached and an ideal to be realized. The assignment is the pupils
sailing direction.
