03 Classification of Bricks
Silica
Silica prevents raw bricks from cracking, shrinking and warping. The
higher the proportion of sand, the more and shapely and uniform in
texture will be the brick.
20% to 30%
Alumina
Alumina imparts plasticity to the earth, so that it can be moulded. If it is
excess raw bricks shrink and wrap during drying and burning.
2% to 5%
Lime
Bricks should contain a little amount of finely powdered lime. It enables silica to melt at the
furnace temperature of 1650oC and binds the particles of brick together resulting in strong and
durable bricks.
5% to 6%
Iron Oxide
It should be in the range of 5-6% for the good bricks.
It impart colour to the bricks
Less than 1%
Magnesia
It imparts Yellowish colour to the brick.
It also decrease shrinkage in the brick.

Characteristics of a good bricks
1. Bricks should have sharp edge.
2. Bricks shall not break in to pieces when dropped from height about 1 meter
4. It should not absorb water more than 20% of its dry weight .
