= measure of the central
angle
s = length of the
intercepted arc
r = radius of the circle r
Length of an Arc
Length of an Arc
Examples:
1. A central angle of 38 intercepts an arc of 5
meters. Find the radius of the circle.
2. Find the central angle subtended by an arc of
length 5m if the radius is 2m.
3. On a circle of radius 180 meters, find the
length of an arc subtended by a central angle of
80 degrees.
Length of an Arc
Try This!
1. Find the number of radians in the central
angle that subtends an arc of 6m on a circle of
diameter 5m.
2. Find the radius of a circle on which a central
angle of radians subtends an arc of 60ft.

Linear and
Angular
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the session, the students
should be able to:
1. differentiate linear and angular velocity;
2. calculate the following:
a. angular velocity
b. linear velocity
Sometimes it is important to know how fast a
point on a pulley or disk is moving or how fast
a central angle is changing. These
measurements are measurements of linear
velocity and angular velocity.
Linear Speed
Distance = rate x time
d = rt
If we let the rate = velocity, we would have
d = vt
If we solve for velocity: velocity =
Now if we replace the distance with s
V=
Linear Velocity
Example:
A runner of the Pat Tillman 4.2 mile
race finished in 28.04 (28 minutes, 4
seconds). What was the runner’s
average velocity?
Angular Velocity
The measure of how fast a central angle is
changing is called angular velocity,
=
Where is the measure of the central angle at
time t.
must be in radians and (omega) is expressed
in radians per unit of time.
Angular Velocity
Example:
A mechanical arm rotates 1/3 of a rotation in
0.25 seconds. Determine the angular speed in
radians per seconds.
Linear Speed Around a Circle
The length s, of an intercepted arc on a circle
with radius r by a central angle is given by
s=r
v= = =r.
v=r
1. A flywheel 6ft. in diameter makes 40 rpm.
a. Find its angular velocity in radians per
second.
b. Find the speed of the belt that drives the
flywheel.
Solution:
a. Since 40rpm represents 40(2)
= 80 radians per minute
= 80 = 80 x = radians per second

second.
b. Find the speed of the belt that drives the
flywheel.
Solution:
b. Using the formula below
v=r
2. Find the angular velocity in radians per
second of a wheel turning at 25 revolutions per
minute (rpm).

3. A tire with radius 9 inches is spinning at 80
revolutions per minute.
a. Find the angular velocity of the tire in
radians per second.
b. Find the linear speed in inches per minute.
4. A truck with a wheel radius of 1.7ft moves
with a linear speed of 35mph. What is the
angular speed of each wheel in radians per
second.
5. A wheel spins at an angular speed of 8 rad/s.
The radius of the wheel is 5cm. What is the
linear speed of the wheel?
Try this:

the linear speed in ft/s? Use the fact that 1 meter is
equal to 3.281ft.

a linear speed of 45 km/h. What is the angular speed of
each wheel?
