 Reader’s Theater After School Acting
Program
This course is offered to first - fifth grade students at our charter school.

It will be offered after school on Thursdays. Student will have many expectations during the program.

Inquiry Question:
How can I, as an educator, enrich student engagement in
skills and content that support public speaking skills and
professionalism through a reader’s theater program?
A bit about the program:
● Students will be performing: The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
○ 6 different scenes (1. Once Upon a Time, 2. Rabbit’s House, 3. Piglet’s House, 4. Eeyore’s Tail,
5. A Very Strange Creature, 6. Time to Party)
● Multiple characters - Each student will have a role in the play
● School community is invited to performance date (Families, parents,
staff, teachers, administrators, etc.)

● Students will attend 10 sessions of practices - during each practice, we will

rehearse lines, practice the script, act out each scene, etc.
Sessions Layout
● Session 1 - Learn about play and pick roles
● Session 2 - Practice reading the script as a whole group
● Session 3 - Practice reading script with sounds and music, practice acting
techniques
● Session 4 - Start acting out roles while reading scripts, start creating costumes
● Session 5 - Script should be well known by now, act out scenes 1, 2 and 3,
finish costume creations
● Session 6 - Act out scenes 4, 5, and 6, finishing touches on costumes
● Session 7 - Act out scenes 1, 2, and 3 with areas to improve
● Session 8 - Act out scenes 4, 5, and 6 with areas to improve
● Session 9 - Act out all scenes as a dress rehearsal
● Session 10 - Full dress rehearsal with sounds, music and acting
 Program Objectives
● Support student engagement in after school programs, educate
students on the performing arts, connect the arts to our STEAM
school
 Standards
● Teacher Leader Standard: Domain VI: Improving outreach and collaboration with families and community
- Family engagement is one way we promote our school of choice. Implementing new programs to support
family engagement will provide more opportunities for prospective families to join our community.
● NBPTS: Proposition 1 Teachers are committed to students and their learning. - This after school program is
an extra amount of time and commitment I am giving to the school.
● CSTP: 1.3 Connect subject matter to meaningful, real-life contexts. - Students will learn how to act
through the performance and use their knowledge of subject matter content to enhance student
involvement.
So far I have…
● 33 total students enrolled in the
program
● Multiple roles for each major
role in the play
● Our Art Teacher opened an after
school program for the set
design!
● Collection of program fees were
all paid
● Creation of costumes from
parent support (community
helpers)
Next I will…
● The program started a few
weeks ago. We are currently
rehearsing and working on
memorization of lines and roles.
● Students are expected to
memorize their lines. We will be
practicing this in sessions.
● Reach out to parents and
families for set support and
dress rehearsal support.
● Ask families to help with
costumes and creations.
● Invite families to our final
performance.
Challenges and Proud Moment
● One challenge I have faced thus
far is the script and practicing
lines with the primary grade
students. I have a lot of parent
support to guide their children
with memorization.
● A proud moment I have is the
amount of students who signed
up for the program! I was
expecting only 20 students to
sign up and I had 35 students
interested and 33 of them
enrolled!

I am very excited to bring the Arts to my school. I grew up in a very

artistic and musically inclined family and have always been
interested in the arts.
Update: Week 11

● Students have created set
designs and costumes
● We have set up stage and are
continuing to practice lines.
● Flyers have been sent out for the
final performance
● Families have been involved in
costume design and line
memorization
Next week I will… Week 11
● Direct the dress rehearsals and
tweak anything necessary for the
final performance.
● Reach out to parents regarding
the time our play will start.
● Ask teachers who are here after
school to be a part of our dress
rehearsals as the audience.
● Set up the full set design and
stage to perform in full capacity.
Challenges and Proud Moments
● The age range is still tricky to
work with, but we are making it
work.
● The first graders have to
memorize their lines more
frequently than the other grade
levels.
● The students have said this is
their favorite after school
program offered.
● Parents are very pleased with
the amount of work I have put
into this program.
