• Lab sheet
• Flower (lily, 1 per person)
• Tray
• Magnifying Glass
• Index Card
• Tape
• Colored Construction Paper
Lab Sheet
• Step 1: Stem
– Cut a piece of the stem off.
– Cut the piece vertically.
– Describe what you see in the stem.
Write at least 4 adjectives.
– Tape the stem onto your paper.

• Step 2: Sepal
– How many sepals does your flower
have?
– Observe how it feels.
– Can you see the veins?
– Use your magnifying glass.
– Record observations.
– Tape Sepal on your paper.

• Step 3: Petals
– How many petals does your flower
have?
– Hold it up to the light.
– Record what you see.
– What does it smell like?
– Tape your Petal on your paper.
Check for Understanding
• Class:
– Take a break from your investigation.
– Share with your group some
similarities and differences between
the stem, sepal, and petals.
– Let’s share out.
– Continue with investigation.

• Step 4: Stamen
– How many stamen does your flower
have?
– Find the anther. What do you notice?
– Wait to tape until after next step.

• Step 5: Pollen
– Pick of the anther and rub pollen in
between fingers.
– Rub it across the paper.
– What does it feel like? What does it
look like?

– Pull the pistil off the receptacle and
ovary.
– How many prongs does your stigma
have?
– What does it look like?
– How does it feel?
– Tape your pistil on your paper.

– Use scissors to cut the ovary
vertically.
– Why is the ovary so important?
– Tape your ovary with the ovules
facing out.
