MORAL PRINCIPLE IN

THE JUDGEMENT OF
MORALITY
*MORAL PRINCIPLES GOVERNING THE
MOTIVE OF THE AGENT.
1. A GOOD ACT WHICH IS DONE FOR GOOD
M O T I V E B E C O M E S D O U B LY G O O D .

The goodness becomes doubled because

the act takes on a new goodness out o a
good motive. And if the good act is done
out of good several motives, a new
goodness is taken from each of them.
2. AN EVIL ACT WHICH IS DONE FOR AN EVIL
M O T I V E B E C O M E S D O U B LY E V I L .

The evil becomes doubled because it takes

on a new malice of evil out of an evil
motive. And if the evil is done out of
several evil motives, a new malice of evil
is given birth by each of them
3. A GOOD ACT WHICH IS DONE FOR AN EVIL
MOTIVE BECOME EVIL.

It goes to show that any evil motive is strong enough to

vitiate the goodness of an act. The good act turns out to
be entirely evil if the evil motive is the only and very
reason for which the act is done, ang if the evil of said
motive is grave though it is not the entire motive of the
act. On the other hand, the good act turns out to be
partially evil if the evil motive is not the whole reason in
the performance of said act and if the motive is not
gravely evil.
4. AN EVIL WHICH IS DONE FOR A GOOD
MOTIVE DOES NOT BECOME GOOD.

To s a y t h a t a g o o d m o t i v e m a k e s a n e v i l a c t g o o d i n t o
disregard the fact that the performance of human act
proceeds from the deliberate will and not from the
motive. It is the will that determines an act is freely
chooses to do, whether good or evil. And if it chooses to
do evil. The act done is evil.
Hence, whether or not the motive of the agent is attached
to it, the act remains to be what it is. So that if it is evil,
it remains to such even if a good motive is there to
attached. The end just not justify the means. However
good, the end can never justify the performance of an evil
act, even if it is only slightly evil. Thus, good motive is
a sufficient reason for doing an evil act.
5. AN INDIFFERENT ACT WHICH IS DONE FOR A
GOOD MOTIVE BECOMES GOOD.

The good motive qualifies the act as good.

6.AN INDIFFERENT ACT WHICH IS DONE FOR
EVIL MOTIVE BECOMES EVIL.

The evil motive qualifies the act as evil.

INDIFFERENT ACT GOOD OR EVIL.

The moral quality of an indifferent act

making it good or evil is derived from the
circumstances surrounding it.
2 . C I R C U M S TA N C E S C A N M A K E A G O O D A C T
EVIL.

The good act is tainted with evil malice

( taken from circumstances under which it is
performed), making evil.

EVIL ACT GOOD

No circumstances can ever justify the

performance of an evil act for it is, in itself
,not in keeping with the order of right
reason and God’s internal law.
4 . C I R C U M S TA N C E S C A N M A K E G O O D O R
EVIL ACTS BETTER OR WORSE.

An act may have an increased goodness or

its species or nature being altered.
