Intro

LADY LAZARUS

Sylvia Plath's 'Lady Lazarus' is a poem from the 20th century that reflects the author's
real-life experience of depression. It is one of her confessional pieces that centers on
intense moments of the speaker's experiences. Plath used the story of Lazarus from
the Bible to illustrate the parallel of her life to the resurrection of Lazarus, who was
brought back to life by Jesus after being dead for three days. The speaker portrays her
battle experience between death and resurrection. However, it is the resurrection that
the speaker is against, while death is her desire to find her identity.

Summary

LADY LAZARUS
The poem is about suicidal ideas and death; this was introduced at the beginning. The
speaker attempted suicide once every ten years. When she was ten, her first suicide
happened; it was not even an attempt but an accident. However, the second time, she
meant to achieve her demise. But that was fruitless. Her gift is dying; it brings her
satisfaction and is something she can do with ease, but nature won't let her pass away. She
began to feel resentment toward the locals as a result. She addresses the listener as "Herr
Doktor" and "Herr Enemy," claiming she is his crowning achievement. She warns him to
beware of her, as she will rise out of the ashes and eat men like air.

pain, and hopelessness. At the beginning of the poem, the author unveil how she
strives to die as she makes multiple suicidal attempts when she said, "I have done it
again." This line reveals that it was not her first attempt. The author included the
incident where she had an accident as the first time she came close to death, and
after that she had plan to suicide for several times. Her first experience of almost
dying motivates her to continue to end her life as she struggles to live. "So, so, Herr
Doktor." and "So, Herr Enemy."— The speaker recognizes mens who saves her
from death as her enemy because she thinks that she is only returning to the misery
she is suffering. She feels that only men treat her precious as an ornament which is
an object, and has no life nor a human being.

suicide attempt to the biblical story of Lazarus whom Jesus resurrected
after being dead for three days. "Herr God, Herr Lucifer"—The speaker
trauma with men caused her to believe that her suffering will end if her
life ends, and the resurrection is what will bring people back to suffering
over and over again. Instead of blaming herself, for the last time she will
tried to take her own life, she would make sure that she would never
suffer again because of men if she ever survived death at the tenth time.
The line in the last stanza, "I rise with my red hair", symbolize a phoenix
indicating that her weakness is her strength

Conclusion

LADY LAZARUS
In conclusion, "Lady Lazarus" by Sylvia Plath is a powerful exploration of trauma,
resilience, and the complexities of the human psyche. Through a psychological
lens, one can see how the speaker's defiance and celebration of their own suffering
can be interpreted as a form of coping mechanism and a means for reclaiming
power and agency in the face of trauma. The poem is a heartbreaking reminder of
the ways in which trauma can shape our identities and our experiences, and it
influences our decisions in life, whether they are a good or bad idea or will have a
positive or negative outcome.
