I. Setting a. Time: 1797–1815 b. Place: England II. Characters a. Protagonist Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bennet Fitzwilliam Darcy b. Antagonist Lady Catherine de Bourge Caroline Bingley III. Plot a. Introduction Mrs. Bennet is a mother of five young ladies, and her goal is to marry all her daughters to suitable men. One day, she found out that Mr. Bingley, a wealthy bachelor, had moved into their neighborhood along with her younger sister. Mrs. Bennet saw this as an opportunity to introduce her daughters, especially the eldest, Jane, to Mr. Bingley at a ball. At the ball, everything fell into place as Mrs. Bennet planned. Unfortunately, Elizabeth "Lizzy" Bennet, the second-eldest daughter, meets Mr. Darcy, a close friend of Mr. Bingley, but he refuses to dance with her. She overhears Mr. Darcy telling Mr. Bingley that she's not attractive enough to capture his interest. b. Rising Action Mr. Darcy and Caroline Bingley convince Mr. Bingley not to marry Jane Bennet, causing her heartbreak when they suddenly return to London. Lizzy met Mr. Wickham, a cousin of Mr. Darcy. She heard from him that Mr. Darcy had ruined his life. This makes her believe in him after witnessing Mr. Darcy's arrogance towards her and deepens her hatred towards him. She believed that Mr. Darcy was responsible for the separation of her sister Jane's relationship with Mr. Bingley. c. Climax Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Dary's aunt, visits the Bennet household to confirm if Mr. Darcy proposed to Lizzy. She tells Lizzy not to accept his proposal because her daughter, Anne de Bourgh, is already engaged to marry Mr. Darcy. Lizzy does not agree to this even though no proposal has been made. Mr. Darcy proposes to Lizzy and admits his love for her. She not only refuses his proposal but she also criticizes his behavior. d. Falling Action After Mr. Darcy gives Lizzy a letter that explains everything, she realizes her true feelings towards him. Mr. Darcy helps the Bennet family to find Lydia and Mr. Wickham. He convinced them to marry to save the Bennet's reputation. e. Resolution After returning to Netherfield, Mr. Bingley seeks out Jane and proposes, and she accepts. Meanwhile, Mr. Darcy also renews his proposal to Lizzy telling her that his feeling has not changed. Lizzy accepts his proposal and the two couples look forward to a joyous future together. IV. Conflict The major conflict in the story is the pride and prejudice between the two young people. Lizzy misunderstood Mr. Darcy's behavior due to her prejudice against him. This is one of the main difficulties that she faces in the story. Another conflict in the story is Mr. Darcy's pride. He is full of pride and does what he thinks is right. In the end, their love for each other overcomes their weaknesses. V. Themes The characters' actions illustrate the various story's themes. The author shows how love can change one's outlook towards another person. Mrs. Bennet's obsession with seeing her daughter marry wealthy gentlemen demonstrates her desire to raise their social status. There is also Lady Catherine, who wants her nephew to be married to her daughter because of their level of social status. Women's reputation was also present in the story. They follow a societal norm that a woman must marry a gentleman for any reason other than love. Reaction and Insights on the Literary Elizabeth Bennet's character has a great impact on me because she embodies a different kind of woman. She is brave, confident, and considerate, with a wise choice of choosing a partner. Not only is she true to herself, but she also stands by who she is. Her perspective on marriage is that she wants to marry for love rather than for social status or financial gain makes her character powerful. This story broadened my perspective and opened a new world to me. I have learned that it's not always necessary to follow the norm or what everyone else does that will make you better, but being different and being yourself. Whatever a person's weakness is, he becomes his strength to make the thing he wants to happen. Wealth, fame, title, and luxury may provide happiness, but only true love can bring lasting satisfaction.
