TRIANGLE INEQUALITY THEOREM

The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is

greater than the length of the third side.
Example: Tell whether if the following are possible lengths of the
sides of a triangle.
a.) 3, 4, 5 b.) 4,6,10
check if: 3 + 4 > 5 True check if: 4 + 10 > 6 True
3 + 5 > 4 True
6 + 10 > 4 True
4 + 5 > 3 True 6 + 4 > 10 False
All the conditions are TRUE,
therefore 3,4,5 are possible Since 6 + 4 = 10
lengths of the sides of a therefore 4,6,10 are not
triangle possible lengths of the sides
of a triangle.
Example: Tell whether the following are possible lengths of the
sides of a triangle.
c.) 8,8,8

check if: 8 + 8 > 8 TRUE

No need to show the other inequalities since they
have same lengths.
All the conditions are TRUE,

therefore 8,8,8 are possible lengths

of the sides of a triangle.
Finding the Range of Possible Length of the
Third Side
Example: Two sides of a triangle have lengths 4 cm and 6
cm. Find the range of possible lengths of the third side.
Let x = length of the third side
third side (x) > Difference third side (x) < Sum
x>6-4 x<6+4
x>2 x < 10
The possible lengths of the third side are 3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9.
INEQUALITIES RELATING SIDES AND ANGLES
If one side of a triangle is longer than second, then
the larger angle lies opposite the longest side.
Identify the largest angle.
Since is the longest side, the
angle opposite is the largest
angle. Therefore, is the largest
angle.
INEQUALITIES RELATING SIDES AND ANGLES
If one angle of a triangle is larger than second, then
the longer side lies opposite the larger angle.
Identify the longest side.
Since is the largest angle, the
side opposite s the longest side.
Therefore, is the longest side.
EXTERIOR ANGLE
An exterior angle of a triangle is an angle formed by a
side and an extension of a side. Each of this exterior
angles forms a linear pair with the interior angle.
Interior Exterior Remote Interior

Remote interior angles are two interior angles not

adjacent to the exterior angles.
EXTERIOR ANGLE INEQUALITY THEOREM
The measure of each exterior angle of a triangle is equal
to the sum of the measures of the two remote interior
angles.

= +
Example: Find the measure of the missing angle.
Example: Find the measure of the missing angle.
Exterior angle = sum of two remote
interior angles

x = 64° + 45°

x = 109°
Example: Find the measure of the missing angle.

y = 180 ° – (92° + 41°)

y = 180 ° – 133°
y = 47°
x = y + 41°
x = 47° + 41°
x = 88°
A Hinge is the metal fixture The top view of a door is
that attaches the door to the shown. When a door is
doorway. opened, the length of the
door and the doorway
wouldn’t change. When a
door is opened wider, the
distance between the door
and other end of the doorway
is greater.
Notice that we form two
triangles, with two corresponding
and congruent sides, the door
and the doorway. No matter how
wide we open the door, the
length of the door and the
doorway will not change. We can
say that the wider the door is
opened the greater the distance
between the door and the edge
of the doorway.
HINGE THEOREM
If two sides of a triangle are congruent to the two sides of
another triangle, but their included angles are not, then the
remaining sides are unequal. The longer side is opposite the
larger angle.

𝐴𝐵 ≅ 𝑋𝑌 , 𝐴𝐶 ≅ 𝑋𝑍 , 𝑚∠ 𝐴>𝑚∠ 𝑋 , 𝑡h𝑒𝑛 𝐵𝐶 >𝑌𝑍

CONVERSE OF HINGE THEOREM
If two sides of a triangle are congruent to the other two sides
of another triangle, but the remaining sides are unequal, then
the included angles of the congruent sides are unequal. The
larger angle is opposite the longer side.
