FAMILY PLANNING
FOUR PILLARS OF PHILIPPINE FAMILY
PLANNING PROGRAM
• 1. Responsible parenthood – refers to the will and ability to responds to the
needs and aspirations of the family. Freedom to decide on the timing and
size of their family.
• Respect for life – protects the life of the unborn from moment of conception.
• 3. Birth spacing- proper spacing of 3 to 5 years.
• 4. Informed choice- couples and individual are informed of the different
methods of family planning.
BENEFITS OF FAMILY PLANNING
• A. to the mother
• 1. Enables to regain her health after delivery
• 2. gives enough time and opportunity to love and provide attention to her
husband and children
• 3. Gives more time for her family and own personal advancement.
• 4. When suffering from an illness, gives enough time for treatment and
recovery
B. BENEFITS TO THE CHILDREN
• > take body temperature every morning before getting up, 2days before ovulation
temperature decrease slightly and begins to rise for several days afterwards.
• > under the influence of progesterone ,24-48 hours after ovulation temperature
rises from 3-6 degree Celcius and remains slightly elevated until next menstruation
begins – period of fertile ( unsafe period )
• This is ineffective if a woman is sick or under stress and illness that changers her
temperature
B. ARTIFICIAL FAMILY PLANNING METHODS
• 1. Condom – stretchable rubber sheath worn over the penis during intercourse.
• B. Diaphragm- shallow rubber dome fits over the cervix, blocking passage of
sperms through the cervix. Device left 6-23 hours after intercourse.
• C. Intrauterine Device ( IUD )
• placement of plastic or noncreative device into the uterine cavity during
menstruation or after delivery, tail of IUD hangs into vagina through cervix
• > action of IUD- creation of sterile endometrial inflammation discourages
implantation.
• Disadvantage- increased risk of PID
• D. Hormonal Contraceptives
• A, Oral contraceptives- ingestion of estrogen and progesterone to prevent
the release of FSH and LH thus preventing ovulation and pregnancy.
• > usually pill is taken day 5 of the menstrual cycle through day 25 then
discontinued
• >withdrawal bleeding occurs within 2-3 days
• > Contraindicated to women over 35 years of age, history of
hypertension, or vaginal disorders and cigarette smoking
• > Minor side effects – weight gain, breast changes, headache and
vaginal spotting,
