Sweeping a Helix

STEP 1 - Your Folder on the
Schools Server Make a Folder
for Lesson 5 Sweeping a Helix
Step 2 Select Create a New Part
Step 3 Name & Save the Part
Step 4 Save it in the folder you just
made, Name it Lesson 3 Lofting, & then
Click Save
Step 4.2 Now the Part is
Named & Saved
Step 4.3 Now anytime you
want to save all you have
to do is click the save
button
Step 5.1 - Blank Part

• This is what the blank part looks like, until you


click on Start 3D Sketch.
Step 5.2 - 1 Sketch st

• Then the 3 starting planes appear. It prompts


you to select a plane to start the sketch.
Step 5.3 - 1 Sketch st

• Inventor automatically goes into 2D View, &


for some reason lays the 1st sketch over on
it’s side. I flip it TOP VERTICAL…
Step 5.4 - 1 Sketch st

• I spun it around to TOP VERTICAL VIEW.


Step 6.1 – Name Sketch
• Double
Click on
the sketch
Name It
Coil
Sketch.
Step 6.2 – Draw a Circle
• Click on the Circle Tool, & Draw a 1” Circle on the
Origin Like in the Screenshot Below.
Step 6.3 – Add Revolving Line

• Click on Line Tool.


• Going to put it in here.
Step 6.4 – Revolving Line
• I made it 3 inches up off the origin point /
Center of the Circle.
• I made it 18 inches long.
Step 6.5 – Add Revolving Line
• Right Clicked the line & changed it to a
construction line.
Step 6.7 – Finished
• Clicked Finished/Exit to finish the
drawing/sketch.
NOTE: • Inventor has a
Coil Tool?
• Click On It.
Step 7.1 – Coil Tool
• The Coil Pop-Up Box
should appear.
• There are a bunch of
options here!
I’m choosing:
• Pitch & Revolution
• Pitch of 2 inches
• Revolution of 20 inches
• Zero Degree Taper
Step 7.2 – Choose Profile
• Select the Circle for the Profile.
Step 7.3 –Revolve Axis
• Select the Axis & Click on the Revolve Construction
Line we put in.
Step 7.4 – It gives you a preview, if
all looks correct Click OK
Step 7.5 – Done!

• The Part, the spring has been made.


Step 8.1 – Sweep Done
• This is the finished sweep.
• Next going to choose materials…
Step 8.2 – Material & Color
• I Choose Low Carbon High Strength Steel.
• Color – I choose a Steel Polished.
Step 9.1 – Drawing
• I put it into an Drawing, 1/2 Scale, then
put in the Annotations & Notes.
Step 9.2 – Drawing
• I put it into an Drawing, 1/2 Scale, then
put in the Annotations & Notes.
Step 9.3 – Drawing
• I put it into an Drawing, ½ Scale, then
put in lots of Annotations & Notes.
Step 9.4 – Saving the File
• File
• Save As
Step 9.5 – Saving
• Save the file in your folder on the
Network/Server.
