Recall!
1. Write down the number that is:
(i) 7 more than 𝑥 x+7
(ii) 5 less than 9 times 𝑥 9x - 5
2. Jennifer is 𝑘 years old. Clare is 5 years older than Jennifer
3k - 2
and Helen is 7 years younger. What is the total of their ages?
3. Mac’s Building Supplies charges 30 000 Philippine pesos per
pallet of house bricks (𝑏), plus a single delivery fee of 4500
Philippine pesos. Write an algebraic expression to represent this
information and use it to calculate the cost of buying 4 pallets of
bricks from Mac’s. 124 500

WHO
AM
i!
A demand (an amount) as a price
from someone for a service
rendered or goods supplied.
A practice or arrangement by which
a company or government agency
provides a guarantee of
compensation for specified loss,

Express Me!
STEM
Amanda and Michael and their friends Jan and Brian are
travelling in Australia.
Amanda and Michael hire a car and a van from Joe’s Hire.
Car hire is 100 dollars for each day hired ( 𝑑), plus a
standard fee of 35 dollars for the hiring period.
Van hire is 140 dollars for each day hired ( 𝑑), plus a
standard fee of 55 dollars for the hiring period.
Jan and Brian hire a car and a van from Bob’s Hire.

Car hire is 90 dollars for each day hired ( 𝑑), plus a

standard fee of 75 dollars for the hiring period.
Van hire charges are exactly twice those of hiring a car.
Try Me!
1. Write down an algebraic expression in terms
of 𝑑 for the cost of hiring a car from Joe’s.
2. Write down an algebraic expression in terms
of 𝑑 for the cost of hiring a van from Joe’s.
3. Calculate the total amount that Amanda and
Michael will be charged if Amanda hires a car
for 3 days, Michael hires a van for 5 days, and
they each take extra insurance charged at $30
per day for cars and $50 per day for vans?
Answers
1. Number of dollars for hiring a car from Bob’s for one day
= 100 × 𝑑 + 35
= 100𝑑 + 35
2. Number of dollars for hiring a van from Joe’s for one day
= 140 × 𝑑 + 55
= 140𝑑 + 55
3. Total amount that Amanda and Michael will be charged
= 100(3) + 35 + 140(5) + 55 + 30(3) + 50(5)
= 300 + 35 + 700 + 55 + 90 + 250
= $1430
Solve Me!
1. Write down an algebraic expression in terms of
𝑑𝑑 for the cost of hiring a car from Bob’s.
2. Write down an algebraic expression in terms of
𝑑𝑑 for the cost of hiring a van from Bob’s.
3. (i) What is the total amount Jan and Brian will be
charged if Jan hires a car for 3 days, Brian hires a
van for 5 days, and they do not take extra
insurance?
(ii) How much more will Amanda and Michael pay
than Jan and Brian?
1.
Answers
Number of dollars for hiring a car from Bob’s for one day
= 90 × 𝑑 + 75
= 90𝑑 + 75
2. Number of dollars for hiring a van from Joe’s for one day
= 180 × 𝑑 + 150
= 180𝑑 + 150
3. (i) Total amount that Jan and Brian will be charged
= 90(3) + 75 + 180(5) + 150
= 270 + 75 + 900 + 150
= $1395
(ii) Amount that Amanda and Michael will pay more
than Jan and Brian
= $1430 − $1395 = $35
