• Under Frequency condition occurs when the power system load exceeds the available generation.
• The detection of under frequency is generally used to achieve load shedding schemes. (Disconnection of low priority
loads in order to maintain the system stability.

• Over frequency will be detected when the generation is in excess of the electrical load and losses.
• Over frequency element used as backup protection when the generation control equipment fails to respond.
• It is possible to do an automatic load restoration using the over frequency elements when the normal situation is
regained
