Abstract

• The Internet of Things (IoT) is bringing a new dimension to the smart

farming market.
• This helps the user to collect the data from the agricultural fields in real
time and move it to remote areas for processing.
• With the available sensor data and the image taken from the fields, automated
disease prediction is possible.
• Deep neural network is used for classification of disease using the leaf images.
• Agriculture is the backbone of our country, but our output is poor when compared
to the global standards due to lack of using technologies in the fields.
• In this work, various sensors like humidity sensor, pH level monitoring sensor,
Temperature sensor, and Soil moisture sensor are used in the agricultural fields
for collecting the real-time data.
• Multiple Sensors are installed in various locations of farms with one common
controller Raspberry PI 3 module (RPI3), which was used to control all these
sensors. Camera interfacing with RPI can be observed on leaf disease.
• Convolutional neural network architecture is used for leaf disease detection and
classification.
• The accuracy of the disease classification system using convolutional neural
network is 96% when the system is iterated for 50 epochs.
Deciding whether to publish

• India is a country which is dependent on agriculture.

• Agriculture plays a major role in rural areas as it is
the primary source of income.1–3 Infection with a
disease causes loss of yield if not detected early.
• Identifying a disease is the biggest problem for the
naked eye farmers.
• Deep learning helps with disease detection by
receiving inputs of images into the system.
Deep Learning Based Neural Network

 A deep learning-based neural network structure is known as a

convolutional neural network.
 With several secret convolutional layers, this network has a
single input and output layer.
 Using this framework, the model will have many hidden layers
and, in the case of many learnable parameters, the accuracy rate
for image related tasks will be improved further.
 The two major advantages using deep neural network are as
follows:
 First, hardware development which has made it possible to
train more complex computational algorithms like deep neural
networks on personal computers or cloud servers and the
 second one is with data augmentation process, even though
dataset is limited for few applications, it can generate a huge
amount with the help of deep neural network to learn efficiently
Materials and Methods ?
 Raspberry Pi 3 Module

 It is like a mini computer consisting of Quad Core 1.2 GHz Broadcom

BCM2837 64 bit CPU, 1 GB RAM, input–output pins, HDMI port, USB
port and SD card port.
 The sensors like soil moisture sensor, temperature sensor, humidity
sensor, pH level sensors can be linked together.
 The inputs from the sensor saved in SD card can be used with some
programming language like python to make automated system.

 Soil Moisture sensor :

 Soil moisture sensor has three pins, first one for input voltage, the
second one for field, and the third one for analog data.
 This sensor tests the soil's moisture content (volume percent).
 The analog value must be mapped within the range of 0–100 as a
percentage of the moisture content is measured. The property this
system uses is soil electric resistance
Materials and Methods ?
 Humidity sensor and temperature sensor

 DHT22 sensor is a low cost used in this system to monitor both humidity and
temperature.
 The output of this sensor is the current digital value of temperature
and humidity.
 The device works better when the humidity ranges between 20 to 80%
and temperature between 0 to 500C.
This device can be connected to Raspberry Pi 3 module by means of
connectors and output.

 pH level monitor sensor

 The pH meter is used to test the hydrogen ion concentration in any samples.
 This value will be compared with that of water which is a neutral solution.
 The values of pH meter range from 0 to 14.
 The values are converted to digital using analog-to-digital converter interface.
When the pH level is less than 5.5, the soil requires nutrients like nitrogen and
phosphorus.

Journal Impact Factor Quartile

• Gives idea of quality profile of the journal in

specific category.
• Calculation:
• The Journal Impact Factor quartile is the quotient
of a journal's rank in category (X) and
• The total number of journals in the category (Y),
• so that (X / Y) = Percentile Rank Z.

• Q1: 0.0 < Z ≤ 0.25.

• Q2: 0.25 < Z ≤ 0.5.
• Q3: 0.5 < Z ≤ 0.75.
• Q4: 0.75 < Z.

Debate :Closed Vs Open Access Journals

• More visibility
• Faster-Recruit editorial staff
• Language polishing
• Social Impact
• Reusability
• Better Impact factor
Finding a Journal

• Journal finder applications

• Become reviewer for the journal you target.
• Read published articles in Journal to understand
journal and editor.
• Write to Editors to get their consent.
• Generally most authors write articles and search
for journals.
• But, we have to write articles targeting Journals.
What Editors look for?

 Journal Metrics- Editor Responsibility

 Quality
 Good science: well planned, well
executed study
 Good presentation
 Significance and originality
 Consistent with scope of journal
 Demonstrated broad interest to readership
 Will it cite?
 Well written ‘story’
 Author enthusiasm
Writing the Article: key points
 Abstract ( Hour Glass Principle)
 Strong Introduction
 Engage the reader
 Set the scene, explain why the work is important, and state
the aim of the study
 Related Study/Literature Review ( Latest)
 Comparative study with common parameters
 Clear, logically organized, complete Methods
 Provide enough information to allow assessment of results
(could someone else repeat the study?)
 Results
 Be clear and concise; avoid repetition between text, tables
and figures.
 Models discussed in related study should be considered to
prove the results.
 Relevant Discussion
 Start strongly – were aims achieved?
 Discuss significance and implications of results

Before You Submit

 Internal review
– Ask your peers to read it to get an alternative
perspective
– Ask someone outside your field to read it
• Read the Notice to Authors
– Follow format and submission instructions
• Write a covering letter to the editor
– Should clearly explain (but not overstate) the scientific
advance
• Submit with the consent of all authors and to only one
journal

Attracting the Readers

 There are lots of opportunities for rejection!

 Remember: your paper is competing with many others for
the attention of editors and readers
 Title
• Brief, interesting and accurate
 Abstract
• Attract readers to your paper
• Aim for 4 sections: why, how, what and implications
• Include important keywords for searching (should not
reflect in title) ( SEO)
• Make it clear and easy to read
