Verbs Tenses
➜Verb tenses tell us how an action relates to the
flow of time.
➜There are three main verb tenses in English:
~ present
~ past
~ future.

➜Tenses are divided into four aspects:
~ simple
~ progressive,
~ perfect
~ perfect progressive.
Simple Tense
➜Simple tenses usually refer to a single
action.

➜Simple tenses express facts and situations


that existed in the

➜Show an action happening right now

➜Use the infinitive (simplest) form of a verb.

➜For example

➜ When referring to the third person, the present tense (infinitive) verb has
an added –s.

Progressive Tenses
➜Progressive tenses are also called continuous
tenses.

➜We use progressive tenses to talk about


unfinished events.
Progressive Tense: The Rules
➜ It is formed by combining the verb’s present participle
by adding –ing with a form of the verb ‘to be’.

➜ In present progressive sentences, we use is, am or are


before the –ing verb.
~ Joyce is hiding behind the door.
