Simple Tense

sometimes /‘sʌmtaɪmz/ adv. 有时
never /‘nɛvɚ/ adv. 从未
 When making sentences to describe events, you have
to think about when the events happen.

 Present simple tense is the base form of verb.


 E.g.
◆ I live in Shenzhen.
◆ He grows up in Beijing.
◆ They walk to school everyday.
 When to use?
 A) Talk about something that is true in the present:
 E.g.
◆ I am fifteen years old.
◆ My sister works in Shenzhen

 B) Talk about some routines:


 E.g.
◆ Our family have dinner at 7.
◆ He goes to bed at 11.
 When to use?
 C) Talk about something that is always true:
 E.g.
◆ The sun rises from the east.
◆ Human has four limbs.

 B) Talk about something that is fixed in the future:


 E.g.
◆ The school term starts next week.
◆ The plane leaves at 10 tomorrow morning.
 NOTICE!!

 Use present simple tense with adverbs of frequency like


always, often, sometimes and never:
 E.g.
◆ My father always gets up at 7 in the morning.
◆ They often go to the cinema on Saturday.
◆ She never plays football.
 Have you noticed sometimes there are “-s” after the verb?

 Present Simple Tense Subject Verb Agreement


 E.g.
◆ read
With Singular Subject With Plural Subject
First Person I read We read
Second Person You read You read
Third Person He/She/It reads They read

◆I read a book. Mrs. Jones reads a book.


 For most of the words, simply add –s to the verb to agree with the third
person singular subject.
 Some other words, you may need –es or –ies.
 Have you noticed sometimes there are “-s” after the verb?
