determined by
• The shape of the Earth
• Tilt of the axis

• The sun’s rays reach the


Earth’s surface at different
angles  the temperature
highest at the Equator and
decreases towards the
poles
Tropical
zone
• Between the
Tropic of Cancer
and Capricorn
• Trade winds blow
here
Along the Equator
• There aren’t any
seasons
• There is a lot of rain
all year round
Between the Equator
and the Tropics
• Two different
seasons: a wet and
a dry season
• Temprerature is
high, there’s only a
little rainfall
• There are deserts
along the tropics
Temperate
zone
Between the Tropics and
the Arctic and Antarctic
Circles
• There are 4 seasons: summer, winter + transitional seasons:
autumn, spring
• Winds blow from the west
• The amount of precipitation decreases from the ocean toward
the inner parts of the continent
Polar zone
• At the poles
• The ground is
covered with
snow and the
temperature is
very low all year
round
• Toward the Arctic
and Antarctic Circles
the seasons are
noticeable
• There are 6 months
of darkness
• Cold, dry eastern
winds blow here
