• Music has the ability and power to influence human
thoughts and behaviors. Employers and retail stores
use the power of music to produce a desired
behavior from their employees and customers. For
example, according to The Journal of Marketing,
background music is thought to improve the store's
image, make employees happier, reduce employee
turnover rate, and to stimulate customer purchasing
Does music actually influence mood and
behavior? What is it about music that
affects mood? According to an article in
the Music Educators Journal, volume,
tempo, consonance, dissonance, tone
color and form all may have an effect on
a person's mood (Gaston). It is not just
the music itself that has an effect on
people; the lyrics of a song can also have
an effect. Many people are concerned
that music with violent or derogatory
lyrics may have a negative effect on youth
and provoke violent behavior.
People are introduced to music even before they
are born. According to an article in Pregnancy
Today, by the fifth month of pregnancy the baby's
hearing is completely developed and they are able
to hear noises that are outside the womb. Prenatal
stimulation through music may provide some
babies with a sense of confidence and relaxation
when they are born
Music is sometimes used to relax and soothe people.
After a stressful event, listening to calming or classical
music relaxes the body and mind. Music can also
induce a more positive state of mind. It has long been
believed that music can also act as an aphrodisiac .
Human senses are powerful and can trigger emotion.
The type of music depends on the person. Music
triggers different emotions in different people. What
one person enjoys and is stimulated by could disgust
and upset someone else.

Many people use music as a way to
get "pumped" up. Gyms usually play music with a
faster tempo to increase speed and motivation.
According to a study on musical tempo an increased
tempo increased the speed in which people preformed
simple tasks. It also affected the participants in the
study by acting as a stressor and increasing their heart
rate. When the tempo of the music was reduced the
heart rate decreased (Mayfield). Music with a fast
tempo and stimulates and demands physical activity
MUSlC GENRES
There are a lot of music genres in music
industry, but we are going to talk about:
• Pop
• Opera
• Classical
• Rock
• R&B
• Hip-hop
• Retro
Pop
music
The term ‘Pop’ is derived from the word
‘popular.’ Therefore, Pop music is a genre that
contains music generally favored throughout
society. Pop has its roots in rock and roll style
music, including influences from many other
genres, from country and Latin to urban and
dance.
Drums, electric guitars, and synthesizers are
all instruments commonly used in ‘Pop’ songs.
Artists such as Madonna, Britney Spears,
Lady Gaga, and Justin Bieber can all be
considered pop music icons.
R&B
music
R & B is one of the world’s top music genres
combining gospel, blues, and jazz influences. The
genre was made famous by African American
artists, and the term ‘rhythm and blues’ was coined
in 1947 by Billboard magazine’s Jerry Wexler.
Before this, R & B was known as ‘race music,’ a
term that originated in the African American
community but was deemed offensive in the
postwar world. In 1948, RCA records marketed
R&B under the name ‘Blues and Rhythm.’
However, these words were reversed by Atlantic
Records, the most dominant R & B label, when this
genre became popular.
Usher, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey are
some of the most prominent artists in the R&B
genre.

Classical music generally refers to the art music
of the Western world, considered to be distinct
from Western folk music or popular music
traditions. It is sometimes distinguished as
Western classical music, as the term "classical
music" also applies to non-Western art music.
Classical music is often characterized by
formality and complexity in its musical form
and harmonic organization,particularly with the
use of polyphony.Since at least the ninth century
it has been primarily a written
tradition,spawning a sophisticated notational
system, as well as accompanying literature in
analytical, critical, historiographical,
musicological and philosophical practices.
Opera
music
Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a
fundamental component and dramatic roles are
taken by singers. Such a "work" (the literal
translation of the Italian word "opera") is
typically a collaboration between a composer
and a librettist and incorporates a number of the
performing arts, such as acting, scenery,
costume, and sometimes dance or ballet. The
performance is typically given in an opera
house, accompanied by an orchestra or smaller
musical ensemble, which since the early 19th
century has been led by a conductor.

Rock
music
Otherwise known as ‘Rock & Roll,’ rock music
has been a popular genre since the early 1950s.
Rock music has its roots in string instruments.
However, the genre now includes modern
instruments; therefore, it is hard to give rock
music an accurate definition. Characterized by
loud, strong guitars and charismatic rock stars,
some of the world’s greatest musicians have
paved their way to fame via rock music.
Some of the greatest music artists of all time
were considered rock stars. These include John
Lennon, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, Freddie
Mercury, and Mick Jagger.
Hip-hop
music
Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as
rap music and formerly known as disco rap,is a
genre of popular music that originated in New
York City in the 1970s. Developed by inner-city
African Americans, Latino Americans, and
Caribbean Americans, it consists of stylized
rhythmic music (usually built around drum beats)
that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic
and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed
as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by
four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping,
DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing,
and graffiti writing.Other elements include
sampling beats or bass lines from records (or
synthesized beats and sounds), and rhythmic
beatboxing.
Retro
music
The word “retro” is used to describe a wide range of things
from fashion to music. In the music world, the term is used
to define a genre that takes inspiration from past musical
styles. This could include drawing from the sounds of
Motown, disco, or rock music from the 1970s and 1980s.
Music that is considered retro often has a nostalgic feel to
it.A Retro style is defined as a style that is consciously or
unconsciously influenced by trends, modes, fashions, or
attitudes from the past. You could look back in time if you
wore clothes from the 1980s or 1990s. Retropop is a
subgenre of pop music created in the 1960s that sounds
similar to today’s music. According to a YouGov survey,
over 17,000 Americans rated the music at the time as best.
