REVIEW OF LESSON 3

Three types of support

1. Examples (brief, extended, hypothetical examples)

2. Statistics (with trustworthy sources)
3. Testimony (with trustworthy, unbiased sources)
Assignment: Provide support for ONE POINT only.

Topic: IU CULTURE
Type: Concept

Organization: Topical
Audience: IU newbies
Preview:
1. Elevator etiquette For support:

2. Five-star food court - Examples

- Statistics
3. Liberal style - Testimony
Point 1: Elevator etiquette
Example: IU is well known among VNU-HCM universities for its queuing culture,
which means all IUers (lecturers, staff, and students alike) are expected to make a
line for elevators. There have been no scandals so far about pushes for elevators at
IU.
Statistics: According to hcmiu.edu.vn, there are around 6000 students currently
studying at four campuses of IU. In rush hours, approximately 1000 students may
use 8 elevators on in the two main buildings. However, with good attitude and
discipline, elevator jams rarely occur.
Statistics: Every elevator has a standard limit for the number of persons in one
ride. As for our campus, each elevator is quite small for a maximum total of 5 or 6
people. Therefore, when you hang out or go to your classroom with your big group
of friends, we would recommend using the staircase instead or take the elevator in
divided groups.
Testimony: There is an unwritten rule of no one-floor elevator ride at IU. Every new
school year IU Confessions Page has posts about newbies taking the elevator from
the ground floor to the second floor.
Point 2: 5-star food court
Transition: Let’s move to the next part: iconic IU food court.

IU canteen, or more exactly, IU food court, is a highlight of our university. In this fantastic
place, you can find a variety of foods which can meet foreign and regional tastes: H&M has
special fried rice; Com Viet has Hoi An chicken rice; Big U offers European food such as pizza,
spaghetti, beefsteak, to name a few.

According to IU food court’s supervisor, every day, IU food court welcomes around 3.500 to
4000 customers, including IU students, lecturers, and students. Interestingly, students from
surrounding universities also drop by IU . :)

According to Foody.vn, a reputable and well-known culinary site in Vietnam, IU canteen is

one of the top 5 best school canteens in the region, receiving 5-star reviews and positive
comments from customers. Now you know why we proudly call it a five-star food court,
right?

IU food court is different from other canteens in other universities because it promotes
payment with Zalopay. This method helps customers get their meals earlier, saving the
waiting time. After initial complaints about IU “da zẻ” on the Confessions page, now we can
hear compliments about the cashless IU canteen from Zalopay users.
Point 3: Liberal styles
Uniform yet variety: Each school's club has its own uniforms that show its identity: IU Social
Work Team has organized many community-oriented programs such as Blood Donation,
Environmental Project, etc. and they set foot into poor rural areas to spread love and joy for
unfortunate lives. Therefore, they stand out with the red T-shirt representing strength,
dedication, courage, and sacrifice.
IU soft skills club has organized many special programs during the year in the form of
seminars, workshops, seminars, etc. With the desire to connect students and give them a
dynamic environment to discover themselves and practice skills in life, they are
characterized by a dark blue shirt color that represents quality, wisdom, and imagination.
Stylist fashion: Usually IU students dress very simply like my friends and me, only shorts and
T-shirts representing the most comfortable and active spirit. Other IUers have a unique style
of dress, expressing their personality with innovative blazers, custom shoes or fancy dresses.
Students at IU are praised by many friends from neighboring universities who characterize
IUers with smart, youthful, dynamic, and trendy dressing styles.
Accessories
85% of IU students use backpacks when going to school, and nearly all of these backpacks
are of different brands. IU backpacks are on sale in Unimart, but only about 3% of students
wear this backpack. These numbers can tell you about our free, individual sense of fashion.

LINKING THE PARTS CONCLUSION

PART 1: LINKING THE PARTS

Purpose: When you write a script, the introduction, the

three main points, and the conclusion must be linked
closely to create a flow of speech.
Refer to the complete script in the next slide with the linking
words/phrases.
PART 1: LINKING THE PARTS

FA

FA: A wake-up call to young people

Introduction
1. Greeting & Thank-you: Good morning everyone. Welcome and thank you for
coming to my presentation today.
2. Self-introduction: My name is… . I’m Marketing Manager of Cupid.com, a Speed
Dating company which bridges lonely hearts throughout Vietnam.
3. Attention-getter: Have you ever cried silently in your room on Valentine’s Day or
other events while others are hanging out hand in hand with the ones they love? Or
have you ever gone to bed early trying to sleep away the long, lonely night, and
woken up in the morning feeling no mood to start a new day exactly the same as
yesterday?
4. Connection to topic: If you say “yes” to my questions, my presentation today about
the FA trend, or the trend to stay single, is exactly a must-hear.
5. Credibility: I myself used to be an FA for several years, and my abundant free time
gave me an idea that I should have a more serious look at this issue.
6. Preview: My opinion will be discussed in three parts. First, I’ll tell you the origin of
term FA. Then, I’ll outline some causes of this trend. And finally, I’ll point out some
effects that the FA trend may result in.
7. Time for Q & A: I’ll take about 5-6 minutes, so if you have any question, please leave
it until the end of my talk.
8. Transition: Now, let me begin the first part of my presentation: What gave birth
to the term FA?
Part 1
■ In this day and age, the number of single people has gradually increased at an
alarming rate over the years, especially in developed countries. This is so
common a situation that even there's a special word for it "FA" - a shortened
form of "Forever Alone". According to the website knowyourmeme.com, the word
took its root from a character named Rage Guy in a cartoon movie in 2010, and
it has been used to express loneliness and disappointment with life.
■ Unlike other Internet trending words and topics which only have a short usage
lifespan, "FA" is able to sustain its living up to today. The word FA is so viral that
even there is a song named after it. As a matter of fact, "Forever Alone" by
Justatee has received over 20 million views on Youtube. Furthermore, hashtag
#FA, #foreveralone... are present all over social networks such as Facebook,
Instagram, Tumblr... following millions of posts and pictures.
■ Another testament to the popularity of the word FA is that "FA" has now had its
usage rate as much as other regular, everyday conversation words like "single",
"not in a relationship"... For example, instead of asking "Does she have a
boyfriend ?", people, especially teenagers, would replace it with "Is she an FA?",
which is shorter and sounds more trendy.
Transition: After you have known how the term FA came into use and how
popular it has grown, we’ll discuss some of the reasons why this has
become part of modern life.
Part 2

First, on the individual level, young people tend to stay alone because they
are not confident enough or, vice versa, overconfident! Few of us are 10s in
appearance, but it is a fact that a large number of us are not confident
enough about our appearance or our communication skills. We are too shy
to get out of our shells looking for our half somewhere on the path of life. I’m
a good example for this lacking confidence myself. I used to hate my big red
nose, and I was constantly feared that my idol would never give me a glance
just because of my clown face!
On the contrary, if you are too confident, there are also good chances that
you travel alone in your life. When you are obsessed that no, or few people
in this world can be compatible with you, you will find it hopeless to spot
your Mr. or Ms. Right among the seven billion people on this Earth.
Part 2 (cont)
Second, on the social level, an increasing number of people have turned
their backs on the traditional pattern of marriage and children due to their
work pressure and their affordability to sustain a family. According to an
Internet survey in Japan in 2012, “the number of Japanese men and women
choosing to marry later in life is on the increase and has reached a figure
that can no longer be ignored.” Two of the reasons for this decision are that
stress at work deprives them of the time looking for a relationship, and

supporting a family in this time of economic crisis is not easy at all.

Comment: So, the reasons for your bachelorhood may come from yourselves,
or may come from the society that you are living in.

Transition: Now that you’ve known about the causes of the FA trend,
let me go on with its impacts. In fact, the F.A status has some influences not
only on individuals in particular but also on society in general.
Part 3

First, for individuals, the FA status can be linked to a number of specific

disorders like mental illnesses or shorter life expectancy.
In some recent research of the WHO – World Health Organization – single
women, especially those above the age of 40, have an increased risk of
mental illness, mainly paranoia, depression or insomnia. Loneliness
heightened level of stress in them, so FA people can easily fall into the mood
of depression, driving fast and drinking much alcohol.
In addition, single men are said not to be able to enjoy life as long as
married men. According to NBC News, a recent research has found that
single men could die about a decade earlier than married men. In real
numbers, “under the worse-case scenario, single men could die about eight
to 17 years earlier than their married male friends’, says David Roelfs, an
assistant professor of sociology at the University of Louisville, Ky. Women
don't fare much better. They could die seven to 15 years earlier than their
married female counterparts.
Part 3 (cont)
Then, for the whole society, the F.A trend is the leading cause of many social issues
the declined birth rate like and the aging population.
According to The Guardian, in 2011 277 million people throughout the world lived
alone, compared to 153 million in 1996. From these statistics, we can see that the
number of people living alone has increased by more than 40% during the past 15
years. This unexpected and unwanted increase leads to more and more babies not
having a chance to say hello to this world.
When the birth rate declines, the world has been facing another problem: the aging
demographics. A study by the United Nations in 1999 predicts that “by 2015, the
world’s population is projected to reach 7.2 billion, of which about two thirds will be
living in countries at or below replacement fertility.” It is not difficult to see the
economic impact of this trend when the aging work force cannot be adequately
replaced by a younger one.

Comment: So, I think you have seen how the FA trend can seriously affect the
development of society. It is not an exaggeration if we say this trend is an
obsession of many countries.

PART TWO: CONCLUDING YOUR TALK

■ Transition to the conclusion and tie back to the topic.

◻ “So as you can see…” or “To conclude…”

■ Review the main points.

◻ “Before I end my presentation, let me run through
the key points again. First, I told you about (point 1),
then I discussed (point 2) and last, I explained (point
3).”

■ Impress the audience with a final comment or a

memorable thought

■ End with a wrap-up and a thank-you.

CONCLUSION

Transition: Well, as you can see, FA is clearly not a term that we young
people use to tease each other. Everyone should consider this social
issue seriously rather than making jokes of it.
Review: During my presentation, I have mentioned three main points:
what FA means and where this term comes from, the reasons why this
voluntary or compulsory “singleism” is getting worse and worse among
young people, and the effects this trend places on individuals as well as
society.
Final impression: Therefore, if you don’t want to die young, go out and
seek for a relationship right away! Your Mr. or Ms. Right will surely warm
up your life and build up your fire!
Wrap-up: This brings me to the end of my presentation. Thank you for
your attention.
CONCLUSION
Review 1:
During my presentation, I have mentioned three main points: what FA means and
where this term comes from, the reasons why this voluntary or compulsory “singleism”
is getting worse and worse among young people, and the effects this trend places on
individuals as well as society.
Review 2:
During my presentation, I have mentioned three main points.
First, the term FA comes from a comic named the Rage Guy and gradually, it gains
popularity especially on social networks.
Second, FA status may be the result of your insufficient confidence or your over-
confidence. It may come from outside when you have to work too hard to have time for
dates, or you don’t earn enough to think about marriage.
Last, this status can affect people in two ways. Physically, FAs can suffer from mental
problems and say goodbye to this world earlier. Socially, the population will grow old but
few replacements will be available.
Tips for an Effective Conclusion

▪ Don’t end abruptly by saying:

▪ “That’s it.”

▪ “I guess that’s my speech.”

▪ “That’s all I’ve got, thanks.”

▪ Don’t introduce new points.

▪ Don’t apologize.
▪ Say “Thank you for listening.” or “Thank you for your
attention.”, not “Thank you for YOUR listening.”
ACTIVITY: SCRAMBLED CONCLUSION

Preview: In my talk today, first, I’ll discuss how to manage your school time, then
work time, and lastly family and personal time.

1. This brings me to the end of my talk, Thank you very much for listening.

2. As you can see, time management is not really something challenging but
actually something controllable.

3. According to Delmore Schwartz, “Time is the school in which we learn, time is

the fire in which we burn”, so if we know how to manage time wisely, we’ll
surely learn many things rather than burn ourselves.

4. Throughout my talk, I’ve told you how to manage the time for your school
activities, your job, your loved ones and your personal affairs. I hope you will
follow my advice, so that your life is a comfortable balance rather than a
terrible mess.
