CONNECT IDEAS between
different parts of text.
The term ‘cohesive devices ‘
refers to the conjunctions,
connectives and pronouns used
to link the parts of a piece of
writing. Examples of cohesive
devices sometimes called
linking words , linkers,
connectors, discourse markers
or transitional word.
WHAT IS COHESIVE FOR EXAMPLE ?
Cohesion is the act, state, or
together of alike
process of sticking
molecules or entities. An example is
water molecules.
The tendency of water molecules to
sick together is reff ered to as cohesion
and they are held together by a cohesive
force such as an intermolecular
hydrogen bond.
THE FIVE COHESIVE DEVICES:

Cohesive
devices or
types of cohesion consist
of five such as reference,
conjunction, substitution,
ellipsis, and lexical
cohesion.
 MEANING:
● Cohesive device is a device which holds
different parts of a thing together.

● In terms of communication, cohesive
devices are typically single words or phrases
that hold and hang different parts of the text.
● These are basically tools of cohesion.
● FUNCTION: The major function of
cohesion is text formation.
● Helps is achieving unity of text as a
semantic whole.
WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF COHESIVE
SENTENCE ?


In a cohesive sentence, a
pronoun, a word that takes the place
of a noun , must agree with the
subject.
For example: If someone takes a
test, it’s essential that he study for
it.
COHESIVE DEVISES connectors or linking words:

 ADDING – and, as well as, more over, furthermore, in


