Week 12 – Method of Consistent Deformation

Prepared by:
Engr. Aldous Neil Jocson
Method of Consistent Deformation
Intended Learning Outcome:
• To derive the basic mathematical formulation of Method of Consistent
Deformation.
• To introduce the concepts of solving indeterminate beams by means of
superposition method.
• To reiterate the importance of knowing multiple deflection methods for various
approach in solving determinate beams.
Force Method
• Originally developed by Clerk Maxwell in 1864, and then later refined by Otto
Mohr and Heinrich Muller-Breslau.
• Since compatibility forms are the basis for this method, it has sometimes
referred to as the compatibility method or the method of consistent
displacements.
• It consists of first writing equations that satisfy the compatibility and force-
displacement requirements for the structure in order to determine the
redundant forces. Then once these forces have been determined, the
remaining reactive forces on the structure are determined by satisfying the
equilibrium requirements.

Maxwell’s Theorem of Reciprocal Displacements
The displacement of a point B on a structure due to a unit load acting at point A
is equal to the displacement of point A when the unit load is acting at point B,
that is, fBA = fAB
Maxwell’s Theorem of Reciprocal Displacements
The rotation at point B on a structure due to a unit couple moment acting at
point A is equal to the rotation at point A when the unit couple moment is acting
at point B. aBA =aAB
Problem 1
Calculate the following for the given propped beam. Draw also the shear and
moment diagram. Assume constant EI.
1. Reaction at the propped support, kN
2. Moment reaction at the fixed support, kN-m
3. Vertical reaction at the fixed support, kN

By= 75 kN, M= 250 kN.m, Ay= 125 kN

Problem 2
Determine the force in the spring. Assume the support at A is fixed. The beam
has a width of 5 mm and E = 200 GPa

Rs = 3.01 N
Problem 3
Determine the following using MCD.
a. Vertical reactions at A, B, and C in kN
b. Moment at B, kN-m
c. Shear and Moment Diagram

By = 282.254 kN
Problem 4
Determine the reactions at the support using MCD.

By = 352 kN, Cy = 352 kN

Problem 5
Calculate the reactions of the fixed ended beam shown using MCD. Choose the
moment supports as the redundant

MA = 333.33 kN.m, MB = 333.33 kN.m

real-world projects.
2) What New Skills or Techniques Have You Developed?
Discuss any new technical skills, tools, or techniques you've acquired during the course. How do these skills enhance your abilities as a civil engineer, and how
might they be useful in future projects or your career?
3) What Challenges Did You Encounter, and How Did You Overcome Them?
Reflect on any challenges or obstacles you faced while studying the course material. Describe the strategies you used to overcome these challenges, and consider
how these experiences have contributed to your growth as a civil engineer.
4) How Will Your Learning Benefit Your Future Career as a Civil Engineer?
Think about the long-term impact of what you've learned in this course. How will your newfound knowledge and skills benefit your future projects, career
aspirations, or contributions to the field of civil engineering?
