Technology

What is Technology ?
• The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes,
especially in industry. Or, the branch of knowledge dealing with
engineering or applied sciences.
• It has been originated from a Greek word techne, which means
art, skill, craft, or the way, manner, or means by which a thing
is gained.
Technology in Communication
• In communication, media is the technology that mediate
between those who make messages and those who receive
them.
• Mass communication is enabled by the media only.
• Without media, there would be no multiplication of a message.
How do technologies come into being ?

• INVENTION – the operationalization of a new idea about how to

do things.
• INNOVATION – It takes place when an invention becomes
logistically and economically feasible on a scale sufficient for the
marketplace.
• DIFFUSION – It occurs when an innovation is taken up for use
by the general public.

Media as Technologies
• Barrier to experience – With technology came the production of multiple
copies of work which brought the wide distribution and commoditization which
has led to a loss of creativity and of the critical power of art. (Theodor Adorno,
Max Horkheimer and Walter Benzamin)
• Shaper of experience – Civilizations are formed in ways determined by
the medium that dominates – Lewis Mumford,1934.
• Technology as reality – The virtual has slowly started taking over the
real. Whatever world media technologies create is the reality.
That is it from the
presentation.
