BALANCED AND Jananya-7E

UNBALANCED FORCES
WHAT ARE BALANCED AND
UNBALANCED FORCES?
• Balanced Forces:
Balanced forces are defined as the forces of equal magnitude and are opposite to each other
Example: Net/Resultant force on the object= (400- 400) N = 0 N

•Unbalanced Forces:
Unbalanced forces are defined as the forces of unequal magnitude and are opposite to each other
Example:
(200 N)
Net/Resultant force on the object= (500-200) N= 300 N ( Towards F1
5(500 N)
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q1. Suppose you were pushing on a heavy bucket of stones with 100 N of force and
it did not move. How many newtons of force would be balancing the force you were
applying
Ans.

(100 N)

The force will be 100 newtons since it is a balanced force and the mass of the bucket
is greater than our mass
Q2. YOU NEED TO PUSH A VERY HEAVY ROCK. YOU PUSH AND PUSH, BUT
THE ROCK DOESN’T MOVE. DRAW A FORCE DIAGRAM THAT SHOWS HOW
THE FORCES WORK AS YOU ARE PUSHING ON THE ROCK.
Contact force

Ans.

Push from the person Friction

Weight
3. A STRONG ADULT PULLS A DESK TO THE RIGHT. AT THE SAME
TIME, A SMALL CHILD PULLS THE DESK TO THE LEFT. DRAW A FORCE
DIAGRAM OF THIS SITUATION. WHAT DIRECTION WILL THE DESK
MOVE? WHY DO YOU THINK IT WILL MOVE IN THAT DIRECTION?

Ans.

Pull from a child Pull from a strong adult

(40 N) F1 ( 90 N ) F2

The desk will move towards F2 as f2 has more force than F1= 90-40= 50N
Q 4. WHEN AN APPLE FALLS FROM A TREE, FORCES
MUST BE ACTING ON IT. DRAW A FORCE DIAGRAM,
AND DESCRIBE HOW THE FORCES ACT ON THE APPLE
TO MAKE IT FALL .
Ans.

The apple is falling from the tree as

forces are not balanced the net force
is downwards that’s why apple falls
down
Air resistance

Weight of the apple
