What is Feminism?
- is an ideology and a movement that
advocates for equal rights between
sexes and an opposition to patriarchal
structures.

03
What is Sex?
- refers to the physical differences between people
who are male, female, or intersex. A person typically
has their sex assigned at birth based on physiological
characteristics, including their genitalia and
chromosome composition. This assigned sex is
called a person’s “natal sex.”

03
What is Gender?
- involves how a person identifies. Unlike natal sex,
gender is not made up of binary forms. Instead,
gender is a broad spectrum. A person may identify at
any point within this spectrum or outside of it
entirely.

03
What is Sexual Orientation?
- refers to the manner in which people experience
attraction or sexual pleasure.

What is Homophobia?
- refers to the irrational fear of homosexuals.

03
What is Gender Socialization?
- is the process by which we learn our culture's gender-
related rules, norms, and expectations. The most common
agents of gender socialization—in other words, the people
who influence the process—are parents, teachers, schools,
and the media. Through gender socialization, children
begin to develop their own beliefs about gender and
ultimately form their own gender identity.

03
Sex and Gender: How do they differ?

Gender
Sex
• Masculinity and femininity
• Categorized as male or female
• Socially, culturally and historically
• Biological
determined
• Fixed at birth
• Learned through socialization
• Does not change across time and space
• Varies over time and space
• Equally valued
• Unequally valued (masculinity as the norm)
