Animal Raising and Fish

Farming
Recap
Who are some successful
people in the field of
farming and fish farm?
Many Filipino families choose to
raise animals as a source of income. To
the right people, it can prove financially
rewarding if done the right way. The
animal raising/fish farming industry can
lead to different entrepreneurial
endeavors ranging from the sale of live
animals and fish to the production of by-
products including meat.
A person’s decision to go into the
animal raising business can be
affected by a wide variety of
factors including but not limited
to the following: personal
interest; family background;
educational background;
environment; and available
resources.
What animal would
you like to raise if
given a chance?
Identify the animals
that you would like
to raise.
Conducting a Survey
After you have decided on the
kind of farming (four- legged
animal/fish farms) you want to do,
it is best to scout the area where
you are situated by conducting a
survey.
Conducting a Survey
Know your area
Know the local animal or fish
industry
Know the people in the
community
Know your market
Learn from others
Know your area
Are there other
farms of the same
kind in your area?
How many? Will
there be competition
between you and the
farms in your area?
Know the local animal or fish
industry
a. What other
animals/fish are
raised in other
farms?
b. From where you
will be getting
your farm?
Know the people in your
community
There are certain rules on zoning.
Make sure you have been cleared to
put up a farm or raise animals in your
rea by the local government or
barangay. Permits and
documentations should be secured
prior to operation.
Animal farms are prohibited to
operate in or near residential areas. It
is important to know that zoning
addresses certain environment
concerns such as potential noise, air,
and water pollution.
Know your market

It is best that even from the

beginning, you already have a plan as
to where or to whom you would be
supplying your products to. Know the
local market and middle men. Get in
touch with direct buyers, consumers,
and retailers in your area.
Learn from others

Some say that experience is the

best teacher. Learn from other
people’s previous experiences. Think
of ways to do business deals better.

that you can use to survey existing farms in
your area.

animals being raised as a
means of livelihood
Swine
Swine is one of those types
of animals that can be sold
live or as meat products. It
is important to choose the
right breed to raise and to
keep your animals healthy
and free from diseases.
Housing swine
A pig house should have
the proper equipment
such as feeders and
drinking troughs. Feeders
and drinking troughs are
best made of concrete
although other materials
may be used such as
discarded automobile or
truck tires cut in half.
Feed Types
Swine at different age levels
require different feed types
to be given two or three
times per day.
Starter Mash- This given to two
to eight week old piglets.
Growing Mash- This given to
two to six month old piglets.
Fattening Mash- This given to
ten month old piglets until
they are ready for slaughter.
Alternative food like
camote tops, kangkong,
papaya leaves, and ipil-
ipil leaves may also be
given to swine from time
to time.
Care Tips:
Maintain the cleanliness of the pen where swine is kept.

The size of the pen should be in proportion to the size and

number of swine.
Swine should be regularly checked for diseases by a
veterinarian. Regular vaccination is a must.
There should be ample supply of food and clean water
every day.
Proper waste management should be observed at all
times.
Cattle/Cow
Cattle or cow
Cattles can be sold live,
as meat, or as dairy
products. Cattle farming
requires a substantially
larger area for the
animals to rom around
or graze—a major
consideration in cattle
raising.
Feeding Cattle/Cow
Tethering- This is feeding
method where the animal is
tied to a 10-12m long rope
and allowed to graze 6-8
hours a day. The animal
should be given water to
drink before and after
grazing.
Tethering
Loose grazing- The animal is
let loose in an open grassland
for 5-6 hours daily. The
animal is allowed to roam
freely to graze.
Loose grazing
Cut and carry- The forage is
cut and fed to the animal in
confinement. This system is
practiced during month when
fields are occuoied and
pastureland is scarce.
Cut and carry
Housing for cattle
Proper housing should be provided to
cattle to give protection from the
elements and to provide shed at night. A
cattle shed should be dry and well-
ventilated. It has to be free from sharp
edges that may harm the cattle. Feeding
and drinking troughs should be provided
in the cattle shed. There should also be a
manure or pit box in the area.
Goat
Housing for Goats
A good housing for goats is very essential
as they are prone to pneumonia when
regularly exposed to rain. A goathouse
must be well ventilated, clean, and dry.
There should be separate pens for lactating
does, dry does, kids, and bucks. A fenced
loafing area should be provided complete
with feeding racks and water troughs.
Feeding the Goats
Goats are known to relish paragrass,
stargrass, napier grass, guinea grass, and
centrosema among other grasses and
legumes. Goats, like other livestock, require
the same nutrients such as protein,
carbhydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins, and
water. During the rainy season, keep the
goats in their pen. Feed them with cut grass
and salt.
Goats
Goat meat and milk
are comparable to
cattle meat and milk.
In the Philippines,
goat meat is
relatively more
expensive than
chicken, pork or
beef.
Fish Farming
Fish Culture
Fish can be cultured in
two ways:
1. Backyard fish culture
2. Finfish cage culture
Backyard culture is usually the
type where fishponds are done
using digging out or excavating
the soil. This uses fresh water
and common fishes cultured are
tilapia, carp, catfish, and
mudfish.
Things to consider
for backyard
fishing:
a. size of the pond
b. water supply
c. types of fishpond
d. food supply
e. harvesting
Finfish cage culture
Finfish cage culture- this is the
method of rearing fish at
seacoast (brackish water). A net
cage is tied to fixed poles and
anchored in the water. Milkfish
can be grown using this
method.
Fish farming, as means of
livelihood, is similar to animal
farming in many ways. Fish meat,
like animal met, is rich in protein
and is healthier alternative. Since
the Philippines is a country
surrounded by bodies of water,
many farmers or farming families
choose aquaculture over raising
animals on land.
Tilapia- this grows
rapidly. It can
reproduce all year
round requires no
special kind of
feeds. It can be
harvested after
three to four
months of feeding.
Milkfish- Also
referred to as the
national fish of the
Philippines. Like
tilapia, it requires
no special kind of
feed for its diet. It
can be harvested
after 7-10 months
of feeding.
Carp- They are hardy
fish. They adapt to
poorly oxygenated, slow
moving, shallow bodies
of water They do not
reproduce as quickly as
tilapia so during harvest
time, a fish farmer is
guaranteed of large-
sized fish.
Catfish- They are
name after their
prominent barbels
which resembles to
a cat’s whiskers.
They can be
harvested between
4-6 months of
feeding.
Write T if the statement is correct
and F if it is incorrect.
1. Learn from other people’s
previous experiences and always
think of ways to do business deals
better.
2. Get in touch with direct buyers,
consumers, and retailers in your
3. Surveys are conducted in order
to gather information about
something.
4. Using online platforms such as
email and messenger is proven not
an effective way of conducting a
survey.
5. There are only 4 elements in
crafting a survey form.
