Battle of Hunain and Siege of Taif

• Battle of Hunain was fought soon after the great Conquest of Makkan on Sawwal 8A.h,630 A.d
• The South-Eastren tribes near Makkah were very shocked for the peaceful surrender of Makkan and planned to attack on
the city s their trade and religion both were in danger
• These two ruling tribes were Hawazin and Banu Thaqeef(of Taif)
• Along with their allies they prepared a well equipped force of 20,000 accompanied with their families ,wealth ,
livestocks ;marched towards Makkah as they decided to fight till death
• under the command of their brave warrior Malik bin Awaf they encamped at the valley of Hunain and posted their archers
covering the pass in the valley which the prophet(S) and his force must cross before they could reach the other side
• On the other hand when Prophet(s) confirmed the news of th the enemies march from Hazrat Hadrad Al-Aslami he also
ordered muslims for Jihad
• Prophet(S)with 12000 men; 10000 of those who accompinied Prophet(S) at the time of Conquest of Makkah and 2000
were Makkan who had recently embraced Islam, marched toward Hunain
• Seeing how the great in number the Muslim army was , some of the followers said , ‘We shall not be defeated”
• Their statement sounded hard to the messenger of Allah
• When the Muslim army reached near Hunain, in deep ravine, most of the troops were surprisingly attacked by the rival
archers which caused a terrible disorder among the Muslim army
• They fled in confusion except his close companions who stood firm with Holy Prophet(S)
Key Points:

• The Messenger of Allah(S) asked his uncle Hazrat Abbas ; who was sonorous voice man, to call out on the followers
• All the companions soon realized their mistake and poured successively into the battlefield in the same manner as they
had left it
• Both the armies stood fast and fought fiercely
• Soon Muslims took upper hand with the help of Allah Almighty and enemies began to retreat
• Malik bin Awef fled to Taif with his men
• A large amount of booty including riding camals, weapons, sheep and wealth along with six thousand prisoners
• Allah says in Quran, “Truly Allah has given you victory on many battlefields, and on the Day of Hunain when you
rejoiced on your number, but it avail you naught and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you, then you turned
back in fight. Then Allah did sent His Sakinah(calmness) on the Messenger and on the believers, and sent down
force(angels) which you saw not, and punished the disbelievers”
• Prophet(S)sent the booty to Wadi Al Jiranah and chased the fleeing enemies who fortified themselves in Taif
• Holy Prophet(S)laid the siege to Taif which prolonged for almost 40 days
• Then after consultation with the companions, Holy Prophet(S) lifted the siege and moved back an prayed, “O Allah! Give
guidance to the tribe of Saqif and send them to me”
• After his return, Holy Prophet(S) distributed the booty
• In 9th A.h Banu Saqif accepted Islam
