Colossians
Chapter 3 – Bible study – Live your transformation
Verse 5-10
Who do I identify with?
Would anyone know by our actions

Read Colossian 3: 5-10

5
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly
nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and
greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of
God is coming.[b] 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the
life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid
yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice,
slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to
each other, since you have taken off your old self with its
practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being
renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Vs 5-6 – Put to death… the wrath of God is coming

Therefore – points back to our identification with the risen Lord mentioned in vs1-4
It is because of our understanding of this fact that we are able to put to death the
things that are contrary to our new identity
Put to death is not just simply to suppress or control evil acts and attitudes – they
are to wiped out completely. Simply put consider yourself dead to them and them
dead to you
Because of these (things) – the sins mentioned is the way the world lives
The wrath of God is coming – sin is self destructive and leads to condemnation
Vs 5-6 – Put to death… the wrath of God is coming

What does Paul mean by earthly?

How can we put these things to death
What warning does Paul give in verse 6
Vs 7 – you used to walk

Used to walk - The sins mentioned marks the worlds rebellion, but it is the past
tense for the believer
The believer should therefore not live like the “sons of disobedience”
The believer should never be comfortable in habitual sin.

There is a possibility that you may fall back, however is should never become a way
of life.
Vs 7 – you used to walk

What verb does Paul use in verse 7

Vs 8-9 – put off

For some the sins mentioned are considered little sins to be overlooked
All the sins mentioned are committed by the tongue (James 1:26)
It is also possible to lie without words – by distorting the truth, by changing your
tone or by mere silences which can be misleading.
But the emphasis is that even these sins are contrary to your identity in Christ
You are required to put off the old man
Vs 8-9 – put off

Which sins are more difficult to put away and why

What reason is given for the command not to lie to one another ?
What about if telling a lie is convenient or beneficial to you or the other party?
Vs 10 – put on

Put on the new man – put on new clothes - We are rid of the First Adam
Because we are created after the image of the Second Adam–Jesus Christ
Renewed in knowledge – Be hungry to know what God says in His word
Vs 10 – put on
