MEDICAL EDUCATION IN THE UK
There are 16 Universities and the Royal College of Physicians that train doctors.
The students have to pay for their training. The average pay is rather high. Advanced
students who have high index in all the subjects may get grants.
The General Medical council is the governing body of the medical profession. But
there is no standard curriculum for all medical colleges and faculties. Premedical training
takes 3 to 4 years.
A medical course lasts from 5 to 7 years at different colleges, for dentists it is 4
years. Only advanced students have the possibility to go in for research. In the United
Kingdom many students have to pay for their study.
During the premedical course students study the main sciences: Chemistry, Physics,
Biochemistry, Human Morphology, Physiology and others. Only those students who have
good results in their pre-medical training can continue their education, the rest of the
students can work as nurses.
During the senior years students work at hospitals and learn much of medical
procedures and diseases to be well prepared for their work. As a rule the students do not
get appointments for work after graduation and make their own arrangements for work.
