RENEWABLE POWER

RESOURCES

By: Syed Hassan Raza Naqvi

WHAT ARE RENEWABLE
RESOURCES
 Renewable energy is energy that comes from a source that
won't run out.

 They are natural and self-replenishing, and usually have a

low- or zero-carbon footprint.

 Examples of renewable energy sources include wind power,

solar power, geothermal energy and hydroelectricity.(each
of these is retrieved by building specific plants for each)
HYDROELECTRIC
POWER PLANT
WHAT A HYDROELECTRIC POWER
PLANT IS AND HOW IT WORKS
 Hydroelectric power, electricity produced from generators driven
by turbines that convert the potential energy of falling or fast-
flowing water into mechanical energy.
 Near the bottom of the dam wall there is the water intake. Gravity
causes it to fall through the penstock inside the dam. At the end of
the penstock there is a turbine propellor, which is turned by the
moving water. The shaft from the turbine goes up into the
generator, which produces the power. Power lines are connected to
the generator that carry electricity to your home and mine.
WIND POWER
PLANT
WHAT A WIND POWER PLANT IS AND
HOW IT WORKS
 Wind power or wind energy is a form of renewable energy that
harnesses the power of the wind to generate electricity. It involves using
wind turbines to convert the turning motion of blades, pushed by
moving air (kinetic energy) into electrical energy (electricity).
 When wind flows across the blade, the air pressure on one side of the
blade decreases. The difference in air pressure across the two sides of
the blade creates both lift and drag.
 The rotor connects to the generator, either directly (if it’s a direct drive
turbine) or through a shaft and a series of gears (a gearbox) that speed
up the rotation and allow for a physically smaller generator. This
translation of aerodynamic force to rotation of a generator creates
electricity.
HOW WIND TURBINES GENERATE
ELECTRICITY WITHOUT WIND
 Wind turbines, like many sources of alternative energy,
are connected to a source of backup power supply. Like
solar panels, for instance, wind turbines may have their
own backup storage unit, which is where they send excess
wind power when they produce more energy than is
required by the consumer on a given day.
SOLAR POWER
PLANT
WHAT A SOLAR POWER PLANT IS
AND HOW IT WORKS
 In a solar power plant, the radiation coming from the sun's rays are
converted into electricity for domestic or industrial use using diverse
systems such as solar thermal plants or photovoltaic power plants.
 The process of electricity production in a solar plant is completely
ecological and doesn't generate polluting elements for the environment, as
well as being one of the most efficient renewable energies that currently
exist.
 The sun gives off light, even on cloudy days. PV cells on the panels turn
the light into DC electricity. The current flows into an inverter, which
converts it to AC electricity ready to use. The current is fed through a
meter and then into your home's consumer unit.(you will need solar back
up batteries for them to work at night.)
GEOTHERMAL
POWER PLANT
WHAT A GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT
IS AND HOW IT WORKS
 Geothermal power plants use hydrothermal resources that have
both water (hydro) and heat (thermal). Geothermal power
plants require high-temperature hydrothermal resources—300
degrees Fahrenheit (°F) to 700° F—that come from either dry
steam wells or from hot water wells.
 We use these resources by drilling wells into the earth and then
piping steam or hot water to the surface. The hot water or
steam powers a turbine that generates electricity. Some
geothermal wells are as much as 2 miles deep.
 Dry steam plants: Use
steam directly from a
geothermal reservoir to
turn generator turbines.
The first geothermal
power plant was built in
1904 in Tuscany, Italy,
where natural steam
erupted from the earth.
 Flash steam
plants take high-
pressure hot water
from deep inside the
earth and convert it
to steam that drives
generator turbines.
When the steam
cools, it condenses to
water and is injected
back into the ground
to be used again.
Most geothermal
 Binary-cycle power
plants transfer the heat
from geothermal hot
water to another liquid.
The heat causes the
second liquid to turn to
steam, and the steam
drives a generator turbine.
