fluids
• ELEMENTS
4.1.1 TITLE; Pressure due to solids
4.1.2 TITLE; Pressure in fluids
4.1.3 TITLE; Archimedes principle and law of
floatation
• UNIT NO. 4.2 TITLE; ATMOSHPRERIC
PRESSURE
• ELEMENTS
4.2.1 TITLE; Measuring atmosphere pressure
4.2.2 TITLE; Common devices depending on air
pressure
ELEMENT NO. 4.1.1 TITLE; Pressure due to
solids
• What is pressure?
- a continuous physical force exerted on or against
an object by something in contact with it. Or

- Pressure is defined to be the amount of force

exerted per area. P = F A {\Large P=\dfrac{F}{A}}
P=AF. So to create a large amount of pressure,
you can either exert a large force or exert a force
over a small area (or do both)
Application of pressure due to solids

1) A syringe consists of a tight-fitting piston which moves in a cylinder, with

a nozzle at one end also works with the help pressure.

2)When air is sucked out of a drinking straw ,the air pressure inside it
decreases and the atmospheric pressure outside forces the liquid to go
inside the straw.

3)A vacuum cleaner has a fan inside that creates a low pressure inside the
device . Consequently, air and dirt particles are sucked into the device.

4)Siphon is only a rubber cylinder utilised for exchange fluid with the help
of pressure
Units of pressure
• Pressure can be simply defined as force per
unit area. The standard unit for pressure
is Pascal (Pa) which is equal to 1 Newton (N)
per square meter (m2 . Other common units
for reporting pressure are atmospheres (atm),
inches of mercury (in Hg), millimeters of
mercury (mm Hg), pounds per square
inch (psi), and torr.
Calculate pressure when rectangular solids
rest on different sides.
1. a rectangular solid block has sides 4×10×20
cm and a density of 7.5. If it rests on a
horizontal flat surface calculate the minimum
and maximum pressure it can exert in si
units, also calculate thrust in both the cases
