NOVEMBER /DECEMBER 2000,

Vol. 78 Issue 6

WHAT IS A TEAM?

A Team comprises a group of people linked for a common purpose.

BILL PARCELLS
Bill Parcells was the director football operations for the New York Jets .He was head coach of three professional football teams : New York Giants (1983 -1990), the New England Patriots (1993 -1997) and the Jets (1997-1999).

As ,a coach in the NFL, has been in lot of pressure.

Business is not football but situations faced are similar.

Keys to motivating people and getting them to perform to full potential are similar in football and in Business. Toughest challenge faced is to turn around a team performing poorly. Important part is to lead a team.

BILLS PARCELLS says.

Even the most talented teams can fall into a habit of poor performance ,If you want to break that habit youd better be prepared to get into peoples faces.

Fundamental lessons about leadership.

You have to be brutally honest. Face to Face confrontations. Sometimes the truth will be painful, and sometimes saying it will lead to an uncomfortable situations. The only way to change people is to tell them clearly when they are wrong. If they dont want to listen, they dont belong on the team.

RULES FOR TURNING AROUND A TEAM

Taking Charge
To lead, youve got to be a leader. Losing should not be tolerated.

Be frank and make one on one conversations with every member of organizations.
Leaders can do everything right with their teams and still fail if they dont deliver their message to each member as an individual. Make it clear from day one that you are in charge, Dont wait to earn your leadership; impose it.

The Power of Confrontation

Creating pressure in an organization requires confrontation. Confrontation not because it makes someone powerful but because it provides an opportunity to get things straight with people. It does not mean putting someone down, when you criticize members of the team you need to put it in positive context. People like direct approach, its valuable to them if the leader is absolutely clear and open.

Success Breeds Success

Believe in yourself when in team. When confronting people about their weaknesses always try to build a culture of success. Establish a set of goals that are within immediate reach so that you move more towards success. When small, visible goals are set people achieve them, they start to get it into their heads that they can succeed.

Picking the Right People.

Now a days in company there is great deal of turnover and not much loyalty. Be Careful about the new people you bring on cause it will lead to serious damages if few bad choices are made. If you get people onto your team who share the same goals and the same passion, and if you push them to achieve at the highest level , you re going to come out on top.
