TYPES OF ROLES IN THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY


SYSTEM ANALYST

• A system analyst investigates and analyzes business problems and then designs
information systems that provide a solution, in response to request from a business or
customer. He or she gathers requirements and analyzes the costs and the time needed to
implement the project .
• Key skills required: Ability to extract and analyze information; good communication,
inter-personal and presentation skills; possess a logical approach to solving problems.
SOFTWARE ENGINEER OR PROGRAMMER

• A programmer or computer software engineer is responsible for the design; development,


testing and development of the computer software used in businesses and homes everyday.
• Two primary classifications exist for this role; software engineer and systems software
engineers.
• The system software engineers designs programs to run the computer
• The software engineer designs software to meet the needs of users of the computer. He or
she understands how both software and hardware function and spends time talking with
clients and colleagues to understand solutions that are needed.
KEY SKILLS REQUIRED

• Knowledge of programming, data structure and database system concepts; software


testing capabilities, attention to detail, understanding of usability concept, strong oral and
written communications capabilities ; analysis; logical thinking ; teamwork ; attention to
detail.
DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

The database administrator [DBM]oversee all aspects of the business’ database structure
including its architecture design, implementation, administration, monitoring, tuning,
backup, migration, and support. He or she will design databases, architect data ware
housing, automate and test database tasks, monitor database utilization and platforms,
restore corrupted databases, install and test upgrades and patches, implement security and
encryption measures, and recommend new database technologies.
KEY SKILLS REQUIRED

• Technical and analytical abilities; and understanding of database architecture; script


writing; an understanding of security, good communication skills, especially for work
within the IT organization.
NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR

• The network administrator oversees the administration, management, and maintenance of


computer network systems and data circuits. It may include upgrading, installing
troubleshooting networks, network hardware devices, and software. He or she maintains
hardware inventory, develop and documents standards for network operations, and
recommends and schedules repairs to the network.
KEY SKILLS REQUIRED

• Technical skill, strong analytical skills, solid oral and written communication skills and
team work.
COMPUTER ENGINEER

• A computer engineer is responsible for designing, developing and testing computer


hardware ,including computer systems, circuits board, computer chips, keyboards, routers
and printers. He or she supervises the manufacturing, production , installation of the parts
KEY SKILLS REQUIRED

• Knowledge of hardware and software component, analysis and evaluation computerized


design skills; testing skills.
