Construction – Triangles – Demonstration

This resource provides animated demonstrations of the mathematical method.

Students could use the worksheet, or construct on plain paper.

Check animations and delete slides not needed for your class.

IMPORTANT!

Worksheets rely on accurate scales.

See next slide for printing instructions.

Printing

To print handouts from slides -

Select the slide from the left. Then click:
File > Print > ‘Print Current Slide’

To print multiple slides -

Click on a section title to highlight all those slides,
or press ‘Ctrl’ at the same time as selecting slides to
highlight more than one. Then click:
File > Print > ‘Print Selection’

To print double-sided handouts -

Highlight both slides before using ‘Print Selection’.
Choose ‘Print on Both Sides’ and ‘Flip on Short Edge’.
Using a compass, a protractor and a ruler,
which of these triangles can you accurately construct?
Not

What other information would we need to construct an accurate copy?

Why can’t we make an accurate copy of this triangle?

We need another length,
or an angle to ‘fix’ the

Why can’t we make an accurate copy of this triangle?

The different size triangles are similar,

but we want congruent triangles
so we need to know the size.
