Arnis 01

Arnis was developed by


the indigenous people of
the Philippines, who
used a variety of
weapons for fighting and
self-defense.

 In 1521, equipped with nothing


more than bladed weapons and
their fearsome Arnis abilities,
Filipino islanders defeated
Ferdinand Magellan’s armored,
musket-bearing Spanish
conquistador forces when they
tried to invade.

1896 when Dr. Jose de Azas set


up a school for the study of
Arnis and fencing. Shortly
after the Spanish Occupation,
Arnis de Mano became
widespread in the Philippines.

 Remy Presas’ travel throughout


the Philippines led to the rise of
Arnis as a national sport, taught
regularly in physical education
classes throughout the country.

01 RESPECT
• respect for one's
opponent as a person,
a fighter, and as a
sportsman.

• is the measure of a
fighter or player. The
laurels of victory
should never be worn
with superiority but
with humility.

• a violent person has no
place in Arnis.
Refinement in character
is important. A student
must be taught the
moral (and religious)
values of everything.

• sincerity for victory's
sake is not the all-
consuming end of an
Arnis player. It is the
sincerity in him to his
fellowman and to his art
that makes him shine in
the array of men.
05 DISCIPLINE
• Arnis is a molder of
discipline. Proper
behavior in the sport
and in life itself will be
the gauge of success.

should learn to control
his temper if he hopes
to achieve success in

- The wooden replica shall measure not


less than 60 cm and not more than 90
cm in full length and should be
Ethnic Asian in origin. It must not
have sharp edges or pointed ends.

• Fitness and aerobic capacity are
increased.
• Many of the techniques do not require
strength or power. Instead, most power
is derived from body movement and
economy motion.

practice. It is a great way to meet
people.
• It promotes a sense of nationalism and
pride as a Filipino.
