G BASICS
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. Define what is lesson chunking and
microteaching basics,
2. Demonstrate understanding about lesson
chunking and microteaching basics,
3. Appreciate the importance of lesson chunking
and microteaching basics.
What is Lesson
Chunking?
A Chunking activity involves
breaking down a difficult text into
more manageable pieces and having
students rewrite these “chunks” in
their own words.
Purpose:
It helps students grasp and retain information
more effectively by focusing on smaller portions of
content at a time.
Helps students identify key words and ideas,
develop their ability to paraphrase and make it
easier for them to organize and synthesize
information.
Benefits:
It enhances comprehension

Reduces cognitive overload

Supports active learning

Four Steps to Chunking
Information:
•Step 1: Start at the Highest Level
- Use a chunking strategy while determining the content
hierarchy of a course. Determine how modules, lessons, topics
will be organized into a logical and progressive order.
•Step 2: Modules into Lessons into Topics
- Divide modules into smaller related chunks and these will
become your lessons. Continue with this process until content
is broken down to the topic level.
•Step 3: Chunk at the screen level
- When you have a solid module-lesson-topic
structure, organize the content so each screen
consists of one chunk related information.
•Step 4: Do a working memory check
- Throughout the process, think in terms of
working memory. Do you really need to include all
the content you have in front of you? If not, get rid
of extraneous content. Less is more.
What is Microteaching
Basics?
Microteaching is a teaching technique where a
teacher conducts a class for a small group of
students at a given time. This approach allows the
teacher to focus on honing a specific teaching
skill/technique, identify areas where they need to
improve, and receive feedback on their
performance in real-time.
Six Steps generally involve in
Microteaching Cycle:
Plan: This involves the selection of the topic and
related content of such a nature in which the use of
components of the skill under practice may be made
easily and conveniently.
Teach: This involves the attempts of the teacher trainee
to use the components of the skill in suitable situations
coming up in the process of teaching-learning as per
his/her planning activities.
Feedback: This refers to giving information to the
teacher trainee about his/her performance.
Re-plan: The teacher trainee re-plans his/her
lesson incorporating the points of strength and
removing the points not skilfully handled during
teaching in the previous attempt either on the
same topic or on another topic suiting to the
teacher trainee for improvement.
Re-teach: This involves teaching to the same
group of students if the topic is change or to a
different group of students if the topic is the
same.
Re-feedback: This is the most important
component of microteaching for behaviour
modification of teacher trainee in the desired
direction in each and every skill practice.
The goal of microteaching activity is to provide
educators an opportunity to design and facilitate
a lesson using a specific method of instruction
covered in class.
Both of these concepts are instrumental in
effective teaching and learning, helping educators
create more engaging and impactful lessons while
continually improving their teaching techniques.
