BACKGROUND
The concept of green facades traces its roots to the intersection of
sustainable architecture and urban ecology. With rising urbanization,
the need for innovative solutions to counteract environmental
degradation has become paramount. Green facades offer a unique
blend of aesthetic appeal and functional benefits, contributing to
energy efficiency, biodiversity promotion and improved air quality.

INTENT
The purpose is to evaluate the economic sustainability and benefits of vertical
greening systems like green facades and living wall systems in dense urban areas.
It focuses to determine if vertical greening systems are economically viable by
comparing installation, maintenance and disposal costs with related private and
social benefits over their life cycle. It includes promoting the wider adoption of
green facades to address environmental issues such as urban heat islands and air
pollution. The goal is to provide valuable insights into the financial viability and
potential benefits of integrating green facades as sustainable solutions in urban
environments.

HYPOTHESIS
The installation and maintenance of green facades in urban areas can provide
significant economic benefits such as reduced energy consumption and improved
air quality, while also providing environmental and social benefits such as
reduced heat island effect and improved mental health. The initial costs of
installation and maintenance may be a barrier to widespread adoption, and the
long-term benefits may not always outweigh the costs. This hypothesis could be
tested through a cost-benefit analysis that compares the initial costs of installation
and maintenance with the long-term benefits of reduced energy consumption and
improved air quality.

SCOPE &
LIMITATIONS
The study focuses on assessing the economic feasibility of green facades, considering installation costs, maintenance
expenses, and potential long-term savings. The comparison of the cost-effectiveness of green facades with traditional
building facade solutions to provide a brief perspective on their relative advantages. The research considers the
adaptability and effectiveness of green facades in various geographical locations, recognizing that factors like climate
and sunlight exposure may influence outcomes.
Limited availability of comprehensive and standardized data on the costs and
benefits of green facades may create challenges in the accuracy of the analysis. The study acknowledges that factors
like plant species, building design and local climate conditions can vary, introducing variability in outcomes. Long-
term benefits and costs may be subject to uncertainty and the analysis might not fully cover the evolving nature of
green facades over extended periods. Certain assumptions are inherent in the analysis and results may be influenced by
the accuracy of these assumptions, introducing an element of uncertainty.
