TEXTILE COLORATION
TITLE: PRINTING WITH PIGMENT
AND PRINTING WITH DYE
What is pigment? and what is dye?
.Dyes and pigments are the main forms of colourant. The main
difference between them is that dyes are soluble and pigments are
insoluble and are suspended in a medium or binder. This is due to the
difference in particle size of dyes and pigments which affects the way
they behave
. A dye is a colored substrate that chemically bonds to the substrate to
which it is being applied .dye is generally applied in an aqueous
solution
Pigment Printing
• Pigments are colors which do not dissolve and penetrate into the
fibers. They have not to be applied together with a film forming
binder. More than 50% of all printing colors are pigment types
• Uses insoluble pigments, which have no affinity for the fiber, are fixed
on to the textile with binding agents in the pattern required.
• Pigment printing is most economical printing process and allows
maximum output of goods because of the elimination of washing off,
quick sampling and high printing speeds. It is not possible to apply it
directly on the fabric.
• Binder must be used to apply the pigment dye on the fabric
Ingredients used in pigment printing
The most common components of pigment printing are:
• Pigment colorant
• Binder :Binder actually hold the pigment color and sandwich it
between fabric surface by plastic coating
• Thickener :It is used to prevent color paste from foaming. Foam
formed during stirring process will affect the quality of textile printing
ADVANTAGE OF PIGMENT PRINTING
• The fact that there is no need for washing after printing allows
printing with minimum cost and machinery.
• The absence of color change before and after printing makes it
possible to see the final colors at the time of printing. This is very
important for detecting errors.
• In printing with pigments, the risk of color difference is very low with
factors such as printing speed and stripper pressure in the same
variation.
• The process is essentially simple and stable.
•Pigments cover the absorption irregularities on the fabric and can be
used in fabrics with different fiber ratios since both fibers are covered
equally by the pigment.

•Prints show sharp contours and the color possibilities are endless.

•It is possible to print very sensitive materials since they do not require
any washing.
• Printing costs are low
Disadvantages Of Pigment Printing

•Not controllable for the binder film.

•Use of solvent like kerosene, spirit etc. can produce problems like
flammability, odor, pollution etc.

•The jamming up of equipment and air and water pollution is observed.

• Wet and rubbing fastness is average
•The handle of the printed goods is often unduly hard because of the
large amounts of external cross linking agents.

•Are sensitive to crushing during roller printing and pigment printing

needs shallow engravings on screen printing.
• The original surface of the textile material is covered by the binder
film. This is occasionally aesthetically effective but usually
undesirable
What is dye :A dye is a colored substrate that chemically bonds to the
substrate to which it is being applied .dye is generally applied in an
aqueous solution

process
• For water-soluble dyes, the sequence of operations is printing the
fabric with a thickened paste containing the dyes, followed by drying
and steaming. During steaming, the dyes re-dissolve in the water
condensed on the paste films and diffuse into the fibers. Relatively
long steaming times are typical. A final washing removes the
thickener, unfixed dyes and other chemicals from the fabric
Reactive Printing Definition
• Reactive dyes printing is the most important printing method next to
pigment
Reactive dyes produce brilliant
shades of very good fastness and leveling properties on cellulosic fibers.

Reactive printing is the definition for a method in which the layer of

applied ink, which consists of reactive dyes, a binder, and specific heat-
activated additives, is steamed and then washed in order for it to set
properly. Reactive printing allows retailers to reach vibrant and accurate
colors that remain durable following usage, outdoor exposure, and more
