Introduction:
Pigment dyeing is a comparatively recent addition. In the
process of pigment dyeing, no actual chemical reaction takes place
between the dye and the fabric. Instead, what happens is that the
pigments get seated on the fabric with the help of binders. The printing
of textile material is the application of color according to a
predetermined design. In direct style, the dyes are directly printed at the
required places of the fabric. Nowadays screen printing is by far the
most common technology today. There are two types of screen printing
system.
1. Rotary screen printing.
2. Flat screen printing.

Objective:
➢ To learn about printing process of cotton fabric by pigment.
➢ To print cotton fabric by pigment.
➢ To make a combined shade using red, yellow, blue color
substances.
➢ To write a report according to the experiment.

Nature of the sample:

Pre-treated 100% cotton knitted fabric.

Apparatus Required :
➢ Beakers.
➢ Glass Rod.
➢ Pipette.
➢ Measuring Cylinder.
➢ Digital Balance.
➢ Screen.
➢ Squeezer.
➢ Curing machine.

Process Sequence :
Fabric Preparation

Thickener preparation

Preparation of Print Paste

Print [By selecting method]

Drying the printed fabric for 2-3min

Curing the sample at 150°C

Printing Recipe:
Pigment Red :1 parts
Pigment Yellow :2 parts
Pigment blue :4 parts
Binder :2 parts
Fixer :1 parts
Thickener :70 parts
Water :23 parts
Total :100 Parts
Mechanism:
Binder is a cross linking agent.Pigment have no affinity with
cellulosic fiber.Binder holds fibre and dye together ,So color from in
fabric.Fixed use as even printing its need acetic media. So here we use
acetic acid.

Pigment
Binder layer

Function of Chemicals :
Fixer:
It helps the pigment particle to attach with fabric.

Binder:
Binder is the material that holds the pigment together and
gives a finish that sticks well to the surface.

Pigment:
Main substances to produce color.

Thickener:
Increase viscosity , stop bleed paste.

Acetic Acid:
To make the media acetic.

Advantages Of Pigment Printing:

• Applicable to natural and synthetic fibre.

• Wide range of color can be produced.
• Can be used for dope dyeing for filament yarn.
• Easily applicable.
• Less expensive.
• Maximum output of goods because of the elimination of
washing-off, quick sampling and high printing speed.
• It presents the fewest problems for the printer of all the
coloration processes, with regard to labor costs, equipment and
reliability of production.
• Properly produced pigment prints, using selected products,
have an unsurpassed fastness to light and good general fastness
properties.
• Extremely well suited for color resist effects, for example,
under azoic and reactive dyes.
• From the economical point of view, pigment printing, using
pastes free from white spirit, is more acceptable than any other
systems, excepting transfer printing methods.
Disadvantages Of Pigment Printing
• Not controllable for the binder film.
• Use of solvent like kerosene, spirit etc can produce problems
like flammability, odor, pollution etc.
• The jamming up of equipment and air and water pollution is
observed.
• Wet and rubbing fastness is average.
• The handle of the printed goods is often unduly hard because
of the large amounts of external cross linking agents.
• Are sensitive to crushing during roller printing and pigment
printing needs shallow engravings on screen printing.
• The original surface of the textile material is covered by the
binder film. This is occasionally aesthetically effective but
usually undesirable.

Conclusion:
Printing can be done by three basis style. I. Direct, II. Discharge,
III.Resist. Here we use direct style and method was screen printing
method. We use 150 degree Celsius for curing.
