Some examples of things to do as you read:
1. Question mark next to a word you don't know
2. Identify topic sentence/main idea of a paragraph and write it in the margins
3. Underline relationships between characters in fiction
4. Think about who, what, why, when, how – retitle the paragraph or subheading in non-
fiction texts. For example, the textbook heading “Major Freshwater Sources in
California” can be alternatively written as, “What are the major freshwater sources in
California?”
