THE PATTERNS OF ELECTRON
FLOW THROUGH LIGHT REACTION
EVENTS
Photons- the smallest unit
of light.
CO2 + H2O—> Glucose + O2
TWO SETS OF REACTIONS IN
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
1. LIGHT-DEPENDANT REACTION
2. CALVIN CYCLE
LIGHT-DEPENDANT REACTION
• Occurs in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast during
photosynthesis.
• Capture and convert light energy into chemical energy, producing ATP
and NADPH, which are used in the later stages of photosynthesis.
• Water molecules are also split, releasing oxygen as a byproduct.
• Involve two photosystems namely Photosystem I and Photosystem II.
The photosystems are named for the order in which
they were discovered, not for the order in which they
participate in photosynthesis.
Photolysis
REVIEW
• Light Reaction use water and light energy to produce ATP and NADPH.
• In the process, oxygen gas is released as a by-product.
• Photolysis is the process by which water molecules split into 2 Hydrogen ion,
oxygen and 2 electrons.
• Photons are responsible for energizing the electrons.
• The process of adding hydrogen molecule to NADP+ to form NADPH is called
Reduction.

a. 1 b. 2 c. 3
2. Is it possible for the first step of photosynthesis to happen with the absence of the sunlight?
a. Yes, because it is a light-independent reaction.
b. No, because it is a light- dependent reaction.
c. Possibly, depending on the availability of the raw material.
3. During the light-dependent reaction, which comes first?
d. Photosystem I b. Photosystem II c. Both a and b
