Listen Carefully
Can you identify the source of the sound and how describe whether the sound is
soft or loud?
Thunder is a loud sound.
Listen Carefully
Wind is a soft sound.
Listen Carefully
A car horn is a loud sound.
Listen Carefully
A bird chirping is a soft sound.
Listen Carefully
An alarm clock is a loud sound.
Listen Carefully
Whispering is a soft sound.
You did some great listening!
Can you think of any other loud or soft sounds?
Have a listen in your own classroom.

Draw and describe two loud sounds

and two soft sounds from your classroom.
Unit : Sound
Topic: Making Sound
Year 7
Learning objective

 to identify the source of sound vibrations.

 to explain the relationship between the vibration of an
object and the sound it produces.

Learning objective:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Success Criteria

I can
 identify vibrating objects as the source of sound in
diagrams or demonstrations
 can provide a basic example that demonstrates the
relationship between vibration and sound.
What is vibration?

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Progress check: movements backwards and
forwards

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Progress check

 Are some sounds are loud and some are soft? Explain?
 Does the volume of a note depends on the size of the
vibrations? Expain?

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Check your progress
 Are some sounds are loud and some are soft? This is the
intensity of the sound. Sounds with a high intensity are
often said to have a high volume
 Does the volume of a note depends on the size of the
vibrations? The size of a vibration is its amplitude. The
bigger the amplitude, the louder the note.

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Examples of Animal Sound

 Male grasshoppers chirp by rubbing

one leg against a wing. Their hind legs
have teeth on them and when these are
scraped against a wing it makes a
sound (a bit like scraping a stick
quickly along a fence).
 Animals can also make sounds by
hitting things. Male gorillas thump
their chests or thump the ground to
threaten other males.

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Progress check 2

 List four animals that make loud sounds.

 Two male gorillas are beating their chests. Explain how
one of them can make a louder sound than the other.

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Check your progress

 whales, lions, elephants, dogs

 It can hit its chest harder

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Human Sound :
1

What happens if you place

your finger across the
middle of your throat while
talking.
What can you feel?

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Here’s What’s Happening…

Your voice is made up of

two rows of muscles in
your throat – these are
called vocal cords. These
vocal cords vibrate when
you speak, sing or shout.

Vocal Cords - Closed Vocal Cords - Open

Then the vibrations carry
up your throat and into the
air for others to hear.
Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Challenge task

Research on the various range of scenarios from soft to loud sounds

in an increasing order, from soft sounds like rustling of leaves and
whisper to a loud thunder.
Plenary: Two star and a wish.

 Write two things you have learnt and one thing you
didn’t understand or would like to learn further

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Scientific Vocabulary

Learning objectives:
to identify the source of sound vibrations.
to explain the relationship between the vibration of an object and the sound it produces.
Self assessment
